Real Madrid doubles down on the Bellingham blueprint with Yan Diomande

Diomande’s signing is all but complete, with only minor details left to finalize. If the deal goes through, Real Madrid will once again follow the same player development model that proved so successful with Jude Bellingham.

Diomande’s signing is all but complete, with only minor details left to finalize. If the deal goes through, Real Madrid will once again follow the same player development model that proved so successful with Jude Bellingham.

Real Madrid is always on the lookout for market opportunities, and Yan Diomande is now on the verge of becoming the club’s next signing. His arrival reflects a shift in the club’s transfer strategy that began with Bellingham. Until recently, spending more than $117 million on a teenager would have been unthinkable at the Bernabéu. It was a huge investment and far beyond the club’s usual approach. But Bellingham’s success has given Madrid the confidence to follow the same path with RB Leipzig’s rising star.

After breaking out in Germany and impressing at the World Cup, Diomande has become one of Europe’s hottest young prospects. Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Manchester City have all been linked with the 19-year-old, but those possibilities have faded since Real Madrid entered the race. The Spanish giants believe he has the potential to become one of the world’s best players in his position and eventually reach the level of stars such as Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué. If completed, the move would also make him the second-most expensive signing in club history.

Following the Bellingham model

The deal is expected to cost around $140 million, even though Transfermarkt currently values Diomande at $105 million. Madrid understands the risk but believes it is worth taking.

The Ivory Coast winger’s market value has skyrocketed over the past year. After scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists in 36 appearances this season, his estimated value has risen from $23 million, when he joined Leipzig, to that $105 million today.

The similarities with Bellingham’s transfer are clear. When the England midfielder joined Real Madrid three years ago, his market value stood at $140 million. It later climbed to $211 million during his first seasons at the club before settling at $187 million following his standout World Cup performances, with expectations that it could rise again.

Madrid believes that the combination of playing for one of the world’s biggest clubs and performing at the highest level naturally boosts a player’s market value. The club hopes Diomande can follow that same trajectory.

A place in Real Madrid history

If the transfer is completed, Diomande will become the second-most expensive signing in Real Madrid history, behind only Bellingham. He would also be the first player from Ivory Coast ever to represent the club.

Following an outstanding season in Germany and an impressive World Cup with his national team, Diomande would return to LaLiga, having previously spent time at Leganés in 2024. He already knows the league and the city, and Madrid believes he can reach another level by playing alongside some of the world’s best players.

As happened with Marc Cucurella, Madrid has moved quickly to beat other interested clubs. The idea is to sign Diomande before he joins another European powerhouse, where his price could climb even higher, as happened with Olise.

The investment is significant, but Madrid believes the winger has already shown enough to justify the gamble. If he continues developing, the long-term financial return could be substantial.

With this move, Real Madrid is once again following the strategy that brought Bellingham to the club: signing a player who has already proven himself in the Bundesliga and betting that his value will continue to rise on football’s biggest stage.

Whether the gamble pays off remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Madrid is determined to strengthen a squad that is aiming to get back to winning major trophies.
