Mexico and Guatemala have the pressure to finish with win today and add three points after El Salvador defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 earlier today for Group A. 'La Selecta' is the first team in the campaign to book their ticket to the quarter-final.

The coach of the Mexico national team, Gerardo Martino, spoke about why Javier 'Chicharito' Hernández was not included in the final roster for the Gold Cup campaign. Instead, Rogelio Funes Mori, who got his Mexican citizenship last month, was called for the tournament. "We thought that Rogelio was a better option and this tournament we wanted to have him."

The last time the Mexico national team faced Guatemala was back in September 2020 and 'El Tri' won 3-0. Could they do it again or 'Chapines' can defeat Mexico for matchday 2 of Group A.

Hirving Lozano to miss rest of Gold Cup after serious head injury

The Mexico national team released a medical update saying Lozano is ‘stable and conscious,’ but ‘he will be medically examined’ in the next few days. Hirving Lozano will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging and Napoli’s head doctor, Raffaele Canonico, is in constant contact with Mexico’s doctor, José Luis Serrano. It has been confirmed that he will be out for and month and miss the ramainder of the Gold Cup.


Mexico could be forced to play behind closed doors during Gold Cup group stage

The opening match of the 2021 Gold Cup campaign was played on 10 July at the AT&T stadium between Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago and it ended in a scoreless draw. During the match the fans from Mexico were chanting homophobic slurs and this could cost the national team a fine and much more for the remainder of the tournament. But there was no punishment for Mexico and fans will be able be at the stadium against Guatemala for matchday 2 of the campaign.
