Mexico suffered against Canada, but were able to complete the job on Thursday night. The Mexican national team took the lead before the break with Orbelín Pineda scoring from the spot. In the second half, Tajon Buchanan came flying in from the left wing to put a low shot through a defender’s legs and into the far corner of the net to tie the game.

Héctor Herrera the hero for Mexico

With the score level, Mexico went on the offense and in the 63rd minute Mark-Anthony Kaye tackled Héctor Herrera inside the box. The referee had a long talk with the VAR and after much consideration, awarded Mexico a second penalty.

Carlos Salcedo's kick was blocked by Maxime Crépeau to keep the score 1-1. An outstanding save from the goalkeeper from Canada to keep his team alive. In the 77th minute Corbeanu made an audacious play inside the box, but his shot was saved by Talavera.

In the 88th minute the game was paused because of the homophobic chants from the Mexican fans and the referee gave seven more minutes of stoppage time. Mexico went on the offense after the game resumed and in the 99th minute Héctor Herrera fired past Crépeau to put Mexico 2-1 up.

Mexico suffered but did their job and now they will face the United States men’s national team in the final of the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Sunday in Las Vegas. Mexico will be seeking revenge after losing to the USMNT in the final of the Nations League campaign last month.
