Football and fans return to Foxborough

For the first time in over a year and a half, the fans returned to Gillette. The Patriots faithful were without question excited to return to the stands, but they were probably just as excited to get a first glimpse of their rookie quarterback Mac Jones.

New England and Washington starting quarterbacks, Cam Newton and Ryan Fitzpatrick both began the game under center, but only played a few series before the the second string QB’s took over.

Nordin 3 for 3 in kicking debut

Neither offense got going early on, and but the Patriots moved the ball down the field through the first few possessions. While neither Newton nor Jones could punch the ball through the end zone in the first half, the Pats led late in the first half 6-0. Quinn Nordin, who as of a few weeks ago was looking for a job on LinkedIn, two field goals in the opening two quarters for New England.

Washington finally got going on the offensive end in the final possession of the first half. Heinicke drove the visitors down 64 yards in the final three minutes to put Washington on the board when Peyton Barber barreled his way into the end zone with eight seconds to go in the second quarter.

Defense wins championships, and preseason games

The home team got another field goal from Nordin early in the third quarter, but the turning point of the game came when Joejuan Williams intercepted Steven Montez and brought the Patriots in the redzone on the return. Rhamondre Stevenson got five straight touches and capped off the drive with a one yard touchdown run to take a 15-7 lead after Nordin missed the PAT.

Washington drove 92 yards down the field and had a chance to tie the game up with under 100 seconds left after Montez found Lamar Miller on a four yard pass. The two point conversion was originally ruled good as Antonio Gandy-Golden  snagged the ball, landed on his knee with possession, but the refs went to review and overruled the call on the field.

There are two games kicking off at the same time tongiht. The Steelers and Eagles will also be starting their game from Lincoln Financial Field at 7:30 pm ET.

This was the scene just days ago when the Patriots opened the doors to Gillette Stadium for the first time in over a year and a half. I can't wait to see what it looks like tonight

Surely there are some nerves floating around the locker rooms, especially for the rookies who are about to get their first taste of NFL action. The rookies aren't the only ones though, the fringe players will have to make the most of their opportunities with the first batch of cuts coming on Tuesday.

Training camps have been going on for a number of weeks, and a lucky few have had the chance to attend practices or warm up games, but this will be the fans first look at thier teams.

We are at Gillette Stadium and oh how good it feels to be back. After a six month break, there is only one question I have... Are you ready for some football? (cue Hank Williams Jr.)

Hello everyone and welcome the official start to Week 1 of the NFL Preseason as the New England Patriots take on the Washington Football Team in one of two games to start a busy weekend around the league. AS English will have you be keeping you up to date with live coverage, scores, stats and highlights as both teams make their season debut form Gillette Stadium.

Shortened preseason starts today

Neither of the teams starters are expected to play too much, if they do at all. With the preseason cut to just three weeks, the focus will be fine tuning the starters, but more importantly the priority will be shaving the roster down to over the next month.

Tom Brady’s departure from Foxborough was followed by the Patriots worst season in some time. Cam Newton tried to fill the living legend’s shoes, but struggled to fit into Bill Belichick’s system. The Pats looked to the future in the NFL Draft back in April when they drafted Alabama QB Mac Jones.

Pats still searching for Brady's replacement

We will get our first look at Jones tonight. The rookie gun slinger is an old school, pocket passing, highly accurate quarterback. His style is more similar to Tom Brady than any of the other big name play callers that came out of college last year.

Washington Football Team is coming off of a sub .500 season, but they still made the playoffs in a dreadful NFC East. They almost shocked the eventual champions in the NFC Wild Card game.

How much will Heinicke play?

Taylor Heinicke will most likely get the start for Washington as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick may not see any time in the opening game of the preseason. Heinicke had a brilliant performance against the Bucs in Washington’s last game of the season, which locked him up a pay raise this offseason.

The Redskins also beefed up their wide receiving core by signing wide receivers Curtis Samuel and Adam Humphries. While we won’t get to see too much of either side’s starters, one thing is for certain, football is back.

It has been almost 600 days since fans have graced the stands of Gillette Stadium. Even though this is a preseason game expect the Pats faithful to be in mid season form after almost two years without watching their side in Foxborough.
