New England is made up of six different states in northeastern USA, so where exactly are the Patriots from?

Within the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont, the Patriots can be found in one of the most historical areas in the region.

Originally the Boston Patriots

The squad is based in the Greater Boston area, which is appropriate as the team was originally named the Boston Patriots when it was founded in 1959. The moniker “Patriots” was chosen by Boston sportswriters in a competition to choose a team name.

Other NFL stories

The Patriots were a charter member of the American Football League which eventually joined the NFL in 1970. During the first decade of the team, the Patriots were looking for a satisfactory playing home, initially holding their home games in different stadiums all over Boston.

The franchise moved to Foxboro in 1971, and along with this move came the change of name. They’ve been known as the New England Patriots since.

A home in Foxboro Stadium

Beginning in 1971, home games were held at Foxboro Stadium until it was demolished in 2002, after which they were moved to Gillette Stadium.

The team flourished as they headed into the 21st century under the leadership of coach Belichick and star quarterback Tom Brady. The age of Belichick-Brady, which lasted from 2001 to 2019, witnessed the Patriots claiming almost every major Super Bowl record.

The record-holding Patriots

The Patriots have won the most Super Bowl titles, tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers, at six (the latest in 2019), and the most number of appearances as well, with 11.

They have 11 American Football Conference championships under their belt. In 2007 they were the first team in the NFL to attain a perfect record of 16-0 for a regular season.

The NFL 2021 season will be the New England Patriots’ 52nd in the league. The record-holding team is aiming to improve on their performance in 2020, and is looking to get back to the playoffs.
