PREVIEW: U.S. Men’s National Team starts their quest to qualify for the World Cup 2022 in El Salvador

The U.S. Men's National Team starts its journey to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar tonight (Thursday, September 2) when they take on El Salvador in San Salvador. This marks the beginning of a 14-game quest against seven teams to be able to represent the country in the World Cup in Qatar 2022.

The USMNT won the last four games against El Salvador. The most recent, in 2020, saw them win 6-0. The U.S. are in the top five teams in Concacaf, so they didn't have to play the first and second rounds of the qualifiers, and instead went directly to the third round to start. They won the Gold Cup against Mexico in August 2021 and are currently on a nine-game winning streak since June 3, 2021.

El Salvador looked good on defense in their first two rounds, allowing only one goal in a 1-1 tie against Montserrat. They won the other three games, sweeping Saint Kitts and Nevis in the second round. The team is coached by former USMNT star and National Soccer Hall of Famer Hugo Pérez.

One of the biggest stars, Christian Pulisic did not travel with the USMNT due to a recent positive Covid-19 test.
