Barcelona vs Bayern Munich: how and where to watch - times, TV, online

The last time Barcelona and Bayern Munich met in competitive competition, Quique Setién’s goose was cooked, Leo Messi slapped in a transfer request and Josep Maria Bartomeu’s increasingly fragile grip on Camp Nou power was peeled from the precipice, one finger at a time for each of the eight goals a rampant Bayern smashed past their hapless opponents.

It was a historic drubbing and the end of an era at Camp Nou. Gone was the aura of European clout that still surrounded Barça despite failing to win the competition since 2015. Gone was the idea that Messi could single-handedly paper over the widening cracks. Gone was the credibility of a club that had sacked a successful manager for not playing the Barça way, his successor Setién forced to promote style over substance. And almost gone was Messi.

Bayern to test Barcelona post-Messi

A year later, the Argentinean talisman really has gone. As has Bartomeu, replaced by Joan Laporta in probably the only move that could have saved the club from bankruptcy. What remains is a coach who is not exactly at liberty to instill his own ideas, Ronald Koeman instructed before the season began that Laporta would very much like to see Barça line up in a 4-3-3, if it wouldn’t be a bother. Koeman has so far obliged, chalking up two wins and a draw in LaLiga while making all the right noises about Barça operating as a better team overall without Messi. Bayern are not the side he would have chosen for the first real test of his system.

Koeman is also light up top with Antoine Griezmann having returned to Atlético and Ousmane Dembélé, Ansu Fati, Martin Braithwaite and Sergio Agüero all unavailable.

Bayern arrive at Camp Nou having won five on the trot that culminated in a 4-1 drubbing of Leipzig last weekend and few punters will be backing Barcelona and Koeman to get off to a winning start in the Champions League on Tuesday with Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller and exciting youngster Jamal Musiala primed to start for Julian Nagelsmann’s comparatively unscathed visiting squad.
