Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich: as it happened

Gerard Piqué post-match: "It's a bad result, we're not going to lie. It is what it is, we have a lot of youngsters here. It is a very difficult year. They [Bayern] were much better. We have players like Ansu, Ousmane, Kun to all come back and help us."

Quotes via Movistar

Bayern Munich made that look so easy and are streets ahead of Barcelona, who have had a reality check at Camp Nou tonight.

This will be a tough one for Barcelona to take.

18-year-old Balde is on for his Barcelona debut.

73

Barcelona change:

OFF Jordi Alba

ON Balde

72

Goretzka bursts into the box but fails to connect clearly and falls over. It rolls into Ter Stegen's hands. The keeper has been excellent tonight.

Jordi Alba crosses from the byline. Neuer rushes out to collect. Alba has arguably been Barca's best player tonight.

70

Bayern substitution:

OFF Musiala

42

Handball?

Alba crosses it, it hits Upamecano's arm but referee Michael Oliver says no.

41

Plenty of whistles ringing around Camp Nou tonight. It started with the Champions League anthem and now it's every time Bayern keep the ball for longer than 10 seconds.

Barcelona play it about very nicely. It gets shifted to Alba out wide and he chips a ball to the back post but Luuk de Jong can't get high enough to connect with the cross.

ARAÚJO!

Araújo heads Memphis' cross over Neuer's bar. It remains 0-0 as we approach the half-hour mark.

27

Davies fouls Sergi Roberto down Barca's right wing and the home side have another free-kick.

That's a pretty big 'Koeman out' sign at Camp Nou tonight. Some fans are clearly not content with the Dutch coach.

23

Barcelona are defending with a back 5 and have been very deep in the last few minutes. This could be a long night for Koeman's men.

19

Ter Stegen saves!

The German keeper stops Sané's left-footed volley from the edge of the box. The former Man City winger struck it really well but Ter Stegen keeps it out.

Both Alba and Sergi Roberto have recently taken pay cuts at Barcelona to help reduce the club's debt, which is somewhere in the region of €1.35 billion.

15

Sergi Roberto!

It's one club captain to another! Alba flies down the left flank, looks up, and picks out Sergi Roberto at the far post. His effort goes up and over the Neuer's bar.

14

Lewandowski flicks it back to Goretzka but his effort is tame and lands in Ter Stegen's arms. 0-0

I had forgotten just how quick Davies was! How could I...

11

Memphis plays in Luuk de Jong but he's flagged for offside.

8

Eric García fouls Lewandowski. Bayern free-kick. Sané takes it from 25 yards and it goes straight into the wall!

6

Memphis takes the resulting free-kick but Bayern, using a very high line, manage to clear it.

Zubizarreta: "The 2-8 defeat will be on the crowd's minds more than on Ter Stegen's"

Andoni Zubizarreta, former goalkeeper and ex-director sport at Barcelona looked ahead to this evening's meeting between Ronald Koeman's side and Bayern Munich in an extensive interview for German daily TZ by Luis Martín.

Zubizarreta recalled some of his own encounters with Bayern as a player and German clubs in general. He expressed his admiration for goalkeeping legend Sepp Maier who he idolised as a child and gave his thoughts on what to expect tonight at Camp Nou considered Barça were thrashed 2-8 by the Bundesliga champions in their last meeting.

“I think that defeat in Lisbon won't have any bearing on this game to be honest. They are two completely different games, different teams, different people… You can't tell me that Memphis Depay is going to affected by the memory of that night. And even those who did suffer in that game will be looking forward to this one, it won't affect them at all. Barça changed coach immediately after that defeat which is understandable. And Bayern don't have the same coach either, they also brought in a new coach a few months afterwards - and that is at a club which generally is very stable. But that's how football is,” he said.

Hoeness: "The fact is, Barcelona are bankrupt..."

Hoeness: "The fact is, Barcelona are bankrupt..."

Uli Hoeness still has plenty to say even after leaving the president's post at Bayern Munich. The former head of the Bundesliga champions gave an interview to German channel Bayern 1 during which, he aired his feelings about Barcelona, Bayern's first rivals in this year's Champions League. For Hoeness, Barça are no longer a reference in world football. He made that quite clear on the eve of the Matchday 1 group game at Camp Nou.

Hoeness conceded that for many years, Barcelona were the club which Bayern tried to model themselves on. But that isn't the case any more. "Barcelona are no longer a model for us to follow, not in any way at all. The fact is, Barcelona are bankrupt. In Germany, Barcelona would have to file for insolvency".

Champions League 2021/22: calendar, schedules and groups

The Champions League 2021/22 campaign gets underway on Tuesday 14 September, with three marquee fixtures taking place on matchday 1: Barcelona host Bayern Munich, AC Milan travel to Liverpool and Real Madrid face Inter Milan at the revamped Santiago Bernabéu.

Given no unforeseen circumstances, Cristiano Ronaldo’s first Champions League game for Manchester United since the 2009 final defeat to Barcelona will be against Young Boys on Tuesday 14 September, while Lionel Messi is set to feature in his first European tie for PSG against Club Brugge.

Reigning champions Chelsea begin their title defence against Zenit at Stamford Bridge, while last year’s runners-up Manchester City face RB Leipzig. City have been drawn in Group A with PSG, with the pair meeting on matchday 2 on Tuesday 28 September. Matchday 2 also sees Atlético face AC Milan, and Juventus host Chelsea in the other standout fixtures.

After the enthralling last-16 tie between Atlético Madrid and Liverpool in February 2020, the two side’s meeting in matchday 3 on 19 October will be one of the most hotly-anticipated fixtures of the group stages. As in 2020, Atlético will host game one between the pair before traveling to Anfield two weeks later on for the second game on 3 November.
