The second matchday of Champions League football gets underway this Tuesday, 28 September, with each of the 32 teams looking to book their spot in the last 16.
After defeating Inter Milan in Italy in matchweek 1, Real Madrid will aim to make it two wins from two when they face Sheriff on Tuesday, while Barcelona will look to turn things around at Benfica following their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich two weeks ago.
PSG host Manchester City on Tuesday in what is the standout fixture of the second round of fixtures, where Lionel Messi could start up front with Neymar against the team coached by his former Barcelona boss, Pep Guardiola. PSG will be out to avenge their semi-final defeat last to City season, while Villarreal and Manchester United will see out a replay of May’s Europa League final when the two sides meet on Wednesday. Having lost on the opening week to Young Boys, Cristiano Ronaldo and his Red Devil team mates will be eager to win this one in order to keep their qualification hopes in a healthy position.
Liverpool travel to Porto with Jurgen Klopp’s men hoping to secure a maximum six points from two games after they beat AC Milan in matchweek 1. Milan now have a tough away tie against Atlético Madrid in another highlight fixture this week. Diego Simeone’s men are also chasing their first win after they drew with Porto two weeks ago. Reigning champions Chelsea and Juventus also lock horns on Wednesday in another must-see fixture this week.
Away goals rule no longer applies
Once the group stage is concluded, the qualifying teams will head to a new-look knockout phase where the away goals rule has been scrapped for the first time since its introduction in 1965. The last-16 fixtures will be played between 15-23 February (first leg) and 8-16 March (second leg). Simple extra time and penalties will now settle ties level on aggregate after two legs, from the last-16 to semi-final stage. Away goals, of course, have never applied in the final, which remains a one-leg affair and will take place on 28 May at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg.
