Cam Little’s big kick: What are the longest field goals NFL history?

Justin Tucker’s reign as the NFL’s field-goal king came to an end on Sunday, when Cam Little nailed a mammoth kick to break the former Raven’s record by two yards.

How far out was Little’s record-breaking field goal?

Late in the first half of the Jaguars’ 30-29 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Little sent a 68-yard effort through the posts, to bring up Jacksonville’s first points of the night. It was one of three successful field goals from three attempts for the 22-year-old, who also sent over a last-minute 48-yarder to take the Week 9 clash into overtime.

A sixth-round Draft pick out of Arkansas in 2024, Little has taken Tucker’s field-goal crown just three months after drilling a 70-yard field goal through the posts against the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, that kick didn’t count towards the record books as it came in preseason.

The record kicks that came before Little

Little’s monster first-half kick broke a record that had been in Tucker’s possession for just over four years.

On September 26, 2021, the seven-time Pro Bowler etched his name into NFL history in the Ravens’ 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions, by hitting his target with a game-winning effort from 66 yards out.

Prior to Tucker’s historic kick, it was Matt Prater who had held the record for the NFL’s longest ever field goal, thanks to 64-yard effort for the Denver Broncos against San Francisco in December 2013.

And Prater’s is now only the joint-fifth-longest field goal in the history of the NFL.

In Week 3 of the 2024 season, Dallas’s Brandon Aubrey surpassed Prater’s mark with a 65-yard kick against the Ravens that broke the Cowboys’ franchise record. Just eight days earlier, Aubrey had been successful from 64 yards, in Dallas’s overtime victory over the New York Giants.

A year on, the Buccaneers’ Chase McLaughlin was also successful from 65 yards, in Tampa Bay’s Week 4 clash with the Philadelphia Eagles.

What’s the longest missed field-goal attempt in the NFL?

Seventeen years ago, the NFL witnessed an attempt that would have raised the NFL bar to a whole other level. On September 28, 2008, Polish placekicker Sebastian Janikowski, who spent 17 years with the Raiders, went for a 76-yard field goal kick in a clash with the San Diego Chargers. Taken into the wind, Janikowski’s kick came up well short.

What’s the record for successful field goals in a single NFL game?

Just under a year before Janikowski’s unsuccessful attempt at NFL history, the Tennessee Titans’ Rob Bironas set the record for converted field goals in a single league game. In a Week 7 clash with the Houston Texans in October 2007, Bironas successfully kicked eight field goals to lead the Titans to a 38-36 triumph.
