Busquets set to move above Iniesta and Xavi for Spain

The Spain captain is expected to feature for Spain against Greece, in what will be his 132rd appearance. Busquets is a permanent fixture for Luis Enrique.

Update:
Busquets set to move above Iniesta and Xavi for Spain

Sergio Busquets will move ahead of Andrés Iniesta on the leaderboard for Spain appearances if he plays against Greece on Thursday. Both players have worn the Spain shirt 131 times and the Barcelona midfielder will surpass Iniesta, the scorer of the goal that won La Roja the World Cup in South Africa, on Thursday. If Busquets features in Sunday's match against Sweden, he will move onto his 133rd appearance, the same number of caps as his Barcelona manager Xavi Hernández.

Busquets shining under Luis Enrique

Busquets is a permanent fixture under Luis Enrique. He was a starter in the Nations League final four and was one of the players who won the most plaudits for his outstanding performance in the tournament, before eventually being named player of the tournament despite Spain losing to France in the final. The captain has been pivotal for Spain but with Barcelona he hasn't performed at the same level. Busquets appears to feel more at ease with Luis Enrique's system, with a more compact block, than he did under Ronald Koeman, with the team more stretched.

Since making his winning debut on 1 April 2009 against Turkey, he has played 131 games in which he has scored two goals (against Macedonia and Belarus) and won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012. Now, it is up to him to lead Spain to Qatar 2022.

Ramos leads the way with 180 caps

Sergio Ramos currently holds the record for most appearances for Spain. He has made 180 appearances since he made his debut in March 2005. Injuries over the last year have caused him to miss out on Luis Enrique's latest squads. If Ramos fails to make a return to the Spanish side, Busquets has 49 games to match him on 180 caps. Iker Casillas is in second place with 167 caps for Spain and Xavi remains in third on 133.
