Dest has been suffering from lower back pain. Barcelona said in a statement that Dest “is unavailable for selection and his recovery will dictate his return.”

Reyna out since September

Borussia Dortmund player Reyna has been sidelined since September with a hamstring injury picked up in the US’ World Cup qualifying opener at El Salvador on September 2. The player's club, Dortmund, have not rushed the 18-year-old back.

US manager Gregg Berhalter has called up Brenden Aaronson, who continues to impress for Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg, and he could start in Reyna’s place. Other options include Tim Weah of Ligue 1 side Lille, and Paul Arriola of DC United.

Berhalter mentioned all three players, though he said: “I don’t think there’s a great urgency to move Brendan to the right, but we’ll see.”

Sergiño Dest absent

Berhalter called up two right backs to compete for Dest’s place. Reggie Cannon missed the September and October qualifiers because of an unsettled contract situation at Boavista, but he is now back in contention.

Borussia Mönchengladbach full-back Joe Scally has also been drafted in. The 18-year-old moved to the German club in January and has started every game of the Bundesliga and German Cup campaigns so far. Scally adds quality and is versatile, with the ability to play right-back, left-back or right midfield. The youngster could get his first cap this month.
