Brazil booked their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a 1-0 victory over Colombia in matchday 13 of the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers.

Tite's men have won 11 and drawn one of their 12 matches to date and currently lead the group by six points over second placed Argentina. Uruguay hosted Argentina in the River Plate derby in Montevideo a day after Brazil's win. Ángel Di María's goal after just seven minutes gave the Albiceleste all three points in the Uruguayan capital to move them ever closer to next year's World Cup.

Di María stunner edges Argentina closer to World Cup

Di María captained Argentina on the night as Lionel Messi started the game on the bench. Uruguay had a glorious chance through Nahitan Nández with just five minutes on the clock but Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez denied the Cagliari midfielder superbly well. Argentina went up the other end soon after. Di María received the ball on the right side of the box, opened up his body and curled a delightful effort into the far top corner of the net. Uruguay went close on a couple of occasions after that. Luis Suárez cracked the post with a volley but Argentina held onto their narrow lead and face Brazil next. Argentina are now on 28 points and now require just a single win to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
