Rummenigge advises Bayern to keep Lewandowski over Haaland

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge doesn't believe that Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland are compatible as Europe's top clubs target the Norwegian.

Update:
Rummenigge advises Bayern to keep Lewandowski over Haaland

Bayern Munich seem increasingly unlikely to enter the race to sign Dortmund striker Erling Haaland next summer due to the financial outlay necessary to land the prolific Norway international and, according to Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, because he and Robert Lewandowski are incompatible in the same side. The former Bayern CEO, who was replaced by Oliver Kahn in July, appeared to suggest the Bavarian giants will not be getting involved when check books start to flutter in the summer window.

Bayern have Robert Lewandowski. He is a level above Haaland. You can’t have both in the same side, it would be madness because one would always leave the other on the bench,” Rummenigge told Sky. “I can only advise Bayern to keep Lewandowski.”

While the World Cup-winning former striker is no longer in an official position at Bayern, his opinions still carry a lot of weight. Real Madrid, PSG, Manchester United, Manchester City, Juventus and Barcelona are all expected to be in the mix if Dortmund decide to make Haaland available, and it has already been suggested that the cost of the operation will be too rich for the Bundesliga side to take on.

In the meantime, a lot depends on Lewandowski. The striker has intimated he may seek to leave the Allianz Arena at some stage to try his luck in a different league and Bayern are keen to tie him down to a new contract, with his current deal expiring in 2023. The Poland striker is 33 but few see him slowing down any time soon due to his incredible fitness levels. “There is no expiry date on Lewandowski. Cristiano Ronaldo is a perfect example of this,” Rummenigge said.
