New interim coach Michael Carrick will take charge of Manchester United for Tuesday's Champions League trip to Villarreal following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking following a run of recent poor results.

The first team coach and past long-serving midfielder was provisionally handed the first team controls at Old Trafford on Sunday. Solskjaer was finally dismissed from his duties following an embarrassing 4-1 loss at Watford - United's fifth loss in seven Premier League appearances.

Carrick will supervise the affairs while the club looks for an interim boss until the end of the season before proceeding with a long-term objective next summer.

The ex-England international will be jubilant to see a reaction from United's players for what is a crucial fixture of this part of the season.

While Manchester United are experiencing a hugely troubling time, Champions League opponents, Villarreal, are not having the best time either.

Villarreal were held to a 1-1 draw against Celta Vigo at the weekend as their mediocre season continued.

Unai Emery’s side sit in 12th position in La Liga with just three wins from 13 matches. Just one of these wins has come in their last five games.

Manchester United remain top of Group F together with their tomorrow's opponents Unai Emery's Villarreal, with two matches left to play. However, Atalanta is only two points further back, and they travel to face Young Boys in Switzerland.

Team news

Raphael Varane remains sidelined for some weeks with a hamstring injury. United captain Harry Maguire is ready for European competition amid a one-match domestic suspension for his two yellow cards - which occurred in just seven minutes - during the Watford debacle.

Paul Pogba is also out for up to three months with a thigh injury sustained with the French national team, while Mason Greenwood is isolated after testing positive for Covid-19.

The biggest problem for Villarreal is that their topscorer Gerard Moreno has been ruled out of the United game, and was not on the bench at the weekend. Another concern for the home side is the absence of winger Arnaut Danjuma, who caused real issues for Diogo Dalot in the first game at Old Trafford. Danjuma has an ankle injury and also failed to clock some league time at the weekend.

Midfielder Etienne Capoue also misses the fixture, as will Spanish striker Paco Alcácer, who scored Villarreal’s goal at Old Trafford.
