‘Chofis’ López extends his loan with San Jose Earthquakes
The Mexican player had a breakout season with the Major League Soccer side and the bosses have decided to extend his loan from Chivas.
Javier Eduardo ‘Chofis’ López arrived on loan at San Jose Earthquakes from Chivas and had a breakout season, winning several individual awards. The Mexican playmaker was named the player of the month of September and was included in the Team of the Week several times.
‘Chofis’ made 31 appearances for the Quakes, scoring 12 goals and providing four assists during the 2021 MLS regular season. Unfortunately, San Jose was not able qualify to the MLS Cup playoffs after finishing in 10th place in the Western Conference.
The bosses want to keep ‘Chofis’
“The decision on 'Chofis', similar to every other decision, those discussions are ongoing," said San Jose’s GM Chris Leitch. "[Head coach] Matias [Almeida], myself and my colleagues have been discussing roster decisions. The majority of these decisions are due on option deadline day, which is December 1.”
According to several reports, the bosses at the Quakes are going to extend his loan from Chivas another six months and if he maintains the form from last season, they will trigger the purchase clause. If ‘Chofis’ doesn’t perform as expected they will have the option to return him to Mexico ahead of the Liga MX 2022 Apertura.
