Jonathan dos Santos is officially out of contract. The Los Angeles Galaxy have decided not to renew it for the 2022 Major League Soccer campaign. Throughout the season there were many rumours that club bosses were fed up with the Mexico international for his off-the-field activities and the amount of injuries he suffered in the past two seasons didn’t help his case.

Uncertain future for Jonathan

“We thank Jonathan for his contributions to the LA Galaxy,” said LA Galaxy President Chris Klein. “In five seasons with the Galaxy, Jonathan was a key contributor and leader for us. We very much appreciate his work ethic, professionalism and passion during his time with our club and we wish him all the best.”

Jonathan joined the Galaxy in 2017 to play alongside his brother Giovani, who left a year later. After five years, he became the 30th player in club history to reach 100 regular season appearances. He scored six goals and provided 12 assists in 103 regular season matches for the team.

His best campaign was in 2019 when playing alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic helped the Galaxy return to the MLS Cup playoffs, but failed to lift the title. In that season Dos Santos managed to stay injury-free, scoring two goals and providing three assists in 29 appearances. He even scored a goal in the playoffs, but the team were eliminated in the second round by LAFC.

Since the 2020 MLS regular season Jonathan started suffering several injuries that prevented him from playing most of the games. In that year he only made 13 appearances, seven as a starter, and only played 699 minutes. This campaign was no different and his future is up in the air. Several reports indicate that he could play for Club América next season - time will tell...
