A quarterback passing for at least 500 yards in a single game is an uncommon occurrence in the NFL- that’s why the people who achieve the feat are said to belong to the “500 Club”.

The milestone was first achieved in Sept. 28,1951 by Norm Van Brocklin of the Los Angeles Rams, when he passed for 554 yards, and this distance remains the record up to now for most passing yards in a game.

A short list

Since then, only 19 other quarterbacks have had this accomplishment to their name. The signal caller who has done this the most number of times is Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger, who made it three times during the regular season- first in 2009 against the Green Bay Packers, then in 2014 against the Indianapolis Colts, and finally in 2017 against Baltimore Ravens.

The 39-year-old also notched the achievement once in the postseason. He threw over 500 yards in a Wild Card defeat to the Cleveland Browns in the 2020-2021 NFL playoffs.

A hard-to-repeat feat

Only one other player has thrown for this distance more than once in the regular season- Drew Brees achieved it first while playing for the New Orleans Saints in 2006, and again in 2015.

Tom Brady joined the 500 Club while playing for the New England Patriots in the regular NFL season, then threw for over 500 again in 2018 in a Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles during the playoffs.
