UFC 269 Oliveira beats Poirier: fight summary, results, highlights - MMA Fighting

Oliveira beat Poirier in the third round at UFC 269 in Las Vegas to defend his lightweight title. Peña upset Nunes in the women's bantamweight title fight.

Charles Oliveira beats Dustin Poirier

Defending UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira was too strong for former interim champion Dustin Poirier, forcing a submisison in the third with a rear-naked choke after he got onto the American's back early in the round. Poirier had possibly shaded an incredibly frenetic first round that had seen the Brazilian title holder in trouble several times as he took punishment from the challenger. But the second round was all about Oliveira who pinned Poirier on the deck and gave him a brutal punishing with a string of elbows to the head.

While Poirier coped and was able to go to his corner, the damage had been done and he was stunned at the start of the third when Oliveira jumped onto him and got the choke. Tap, tap, and the Brazilian retains his belt.

The co-feature bout saw Amanda Nunes stunned by Juliana Peña, who took the title in the second round in a massive, massive upset.

Oliveira!

The belt belongs to the Brazilian

Oliveira: "I'm the world champion. I'm the man. They talk, I do it"

Oliveira beats Poirier by submission

Oliveira got onto Poirier's back and choked Poirier into submission.

Round 3: Oliveira vs Poirier

Oliveira again on the offensive and he’s on Poirier’s back early. He’s choking him. Can Poirier get out? He CANNOT!!

Oliveira defends his title!

Round 2: Oliveira vs Poirier

They start by grappling and end up on the cage wall . Poirier forces Oliveira onto the floor and goes for some head shots. The Brazilian goes for the arm bar, but can’t make it. Extended hold on the floor, Oliveira on top and he lands a big elbow on the head. Oliveira grinding Poirier here.

Poirier is getting controlled on the ground in a closed guard and getting absolutely beat up. Dustin in trouble here.

Poirier not trying to get out of this, and he’s taking elbow after elbow to the face. Utter punishment here. But the American takes it and makes it to the end of the round.

Oliveira's round.

Round 1: Oliveira vs Poirier

Oliveira on the attack early but Poirier lands a right and knocks Oliveira almost to the floor but he’s up quickly. The crowd chanting “USA, USA!”

They grapple and Oliveira lands a knee on the body. The Brazilian mixing it up in there. Oliveira goes for a take down and has Poirier pinned against the cage. Dustin escapes. Oliveira landing knees to the body. Poirier backs away and works his jab and lands a couple. Poirier lands a big right hand! Puts the Brazilian in trouble but he copes, and comes back. Frenetic pace. Massive right from Poirier puts Oliveira on the deck! He gets back up but he’s struggling.

Poirier really hurting Oliveira, the Brazilian taking so many shots here. The American looking for a big hit. But Oliveira somehow gets the energy to go for a knee to the head!

That was a crazy first round. Crazy pace and so many big shots from both fighters. Poirier on top and at a couple of points it looked like he might have been able to finish his rival.

Hug from the fighters to get us underway. Doesn't feel like any bad blood here. Two professionals out to get the job done. With a lot of respect.

Five rounds to be the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion... Oliveira vs Poirier.

Oliveira is 155 pounds to 154.5 for Poirier.

Oliveira is on a 9-fight win streak. Continuing tonight?

Champion Oliveira heading into the arena!

Poirier is here! The former interim UFC Lightweight Champion is in the Octagon!

Well, how do Oliveira and Poirier follow that? Brutal second round from both fighters, stunning upset from Peña...

Stunning, in every sense of the word

Peña! UFC Champion!

Biggest upset ever! Peña was in trouble in the first round, but managed to cope on the floor, but in the second round Peña did EXACTLY what she said she was going to do, stand up and keep throwing punches. And jab after jab landed and, even though Nunes connected with several to Julianna's face, the American kept pushing the Brazilian back with her punches and finally took her onto the floor and choked her out.

Julianna Peña is the UFC Bantamweight Champion!

Peña refuses to look Nunes in the eye as the bump gloves and we're off!

For the Women's Bantamweight title

Remember, it's five rounds for this title fight between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Peña.

And the two fighters are in the octagon, not looking at each other...

Amanda Nunes, hood up, comes determinedly down the corridor and into the arena.

Underdog Pena is here. She's looking EXTREMELY serious. EXTREMELY focused.

Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pena

Nunes vs Pena is coming up in just a few minutes. Amanda Nunes IS the complete fighter, with superb firepower, amazing precision and extreme awareness. Who's betting against the Queen of the Jungle?

Neal wins it by split decision

Split decision for Geoff 'Hands of Steel' Neal! 28-29, 30-27, 29-28. Ponzinibbio absolutely gutted by that but he can't have too many complaints.

Neal steps it up in the third round

Well Neal was told by his coach, amidst a barrage of expletives, to give it his all in the third round, and he did, upping the frequency of his punches and hurting Ponzinibbio on a number of occasions. He's probably done enough to take that round and with it the fight.

Not entirely electric

We were expecting a little bit more dynamism from these two, but so far Neal and Ponzinibbio haven't served up too much electric action over their first two rounds. Neal's connected with the Argentinean, who is bleeding from his eyebrow, but mostly the two have exchanged punches without landing much and looking a bit flat-footed.

Ponzinibbio at -130 now the favourite to take it after looking a bit sharper at the end of the second.

Oliveira arriving

Oliveira is in the house. We've got this fight (Neal vs Ponzinibbio) then Nunes vs Pena, and then it's time for the big one: Oliveira vs Poirier.

No chin trending

After Cody was sent to the floor by Kai Kara-France 'No chin' is trending on Twitter.

Kai Kara-France on fire

Scenes Garbrandt will not want to remember.

Geoff Neal vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio

Welterweight fight next: America's Neal (13-4) takes on Argentina's Ponzinibbo (29-4). Expect some fireworks from these two electric boxers.

Kai lands and lands again

Kara-France on point.

Kai!

Well that didn't last long. Kara-France connects with Garbrandt with a right half way through the first round and puts him on the canvas. Garbrandt managed to get back up and even teased Kara-France to come and finish him off, which he very emphatically did, with a massive combination to the American's befuddled head.

Cody Garbrandt vs. Kai Kara-France

Flyweight bout next on the card - with only this and two more fights before Oliveira vs Poirier - and its Garbrandt vs Kara-France.

Suga Show

Huge knockdown.

Malley!

Malley always looking on top in the first round, just faster, neater, nimbler, but with so much patience... and when he sees his chance he lands a big right hand and then just pummels Paiva to the canvas. Smashed.

RAULIAN PAIVA VS SEAN O’MALLEY

Suga Sean O'Malley, with his rainbow barnet, faces Raulian Paiva on a 3-win streak next up.

Nunes 'mild' favourite

Amanda Nunes is -1000 favourite tonight against Julianna Pena (+650)

Emmett vs Dan Ige

Next bout is Josh Emmett vs Dan Ige. And Emmett FLOORS Ige early in the first round with a solid punch!

But Ige somehow keeps clear of the punches when he's on the floor and battles back, but there's no doubt Emmett takes the round.

Ige was left bleeding in the second, but stayed on his feet and kept trading blows, and probably shaded that one, with quick precise punches, enough of which he landed, and at one point he had Emmett stumbling.

Both fighters finished the third on their feet, having traded jabs, punches, the occasional haymaker and kicks here and there during the round. Emmett's?

The judges scored it unanimously for Emmett: 29-28, 29-28, 30-27.

Cruz beats Munhoz - unanimous decision 29-28

As expected Dominic Cruz defeats Munhoz with a unanimous decision. At one point in the first round he was in deep, deep trouble. Cruz reckons he slipped, but replays show that even if he slipped he took an absolute screamer to the head as he did so. But he survived that and went on to deservedly win.

Cruz vs Munhoz

Cruz was in all sorts of trouble in the first round but did so well to survive on the canvas after being clipped by Munhoz. Cruz probably shaded the second round, moving well and landing punches, which drew blood from Munhoz's face. And Cruz thinks he's won it after the third where he again was lighter on his feet and looked better as the two traded blows right to the end.

Hot sauce

Cruz getting fired up with Poirier's hot sauce.

Back to Bantamweight...

We step back down to bantamweight after that battle of heavies, with USA's Dominick Cruz and Brazil's Pedro Munhoz up next.

The shoe!

Tuivasa was thirsty after that KO.

Tuivasa drains the shoe!

As his own tradition dictates, Tuivasa downs a beer from a fan's shoe. Bam Bam!

Tuivasa!

Tension was palpable there for the first minute and a half of the first round as the two big men circled round and round, before finally engaging. Tai shaded the first round with a lot of decent work on the ropes, but at the start of the second Tai got some big punches through Sakai's guard and that's a clean knockout. Bam Bam indeed!

"Looks alright, eh?!" says Tai watching the replay of the combination that put Sakai on the floor. "I'm a banger from Sydney. I'll bang with anyone," concludes Tai.

Oliveira confident

Current champion's thoughts going into tonight's bout...

Next up in the octagon is a heavyweight bout between Brazilian Augusto Sakai and fan favourite Tai Tuivasa.

Tuivasa, on a 3-fight win streak, is currently singing along to Aqua's Barbie Girl as he comes out.

Sakai stands 6' 3" compared to 6' 2" for Tuivasa, but the big Aussie is the favourite for this.

Silva!

Wright looked to be doing some damage but he left his head open in the clinch on the ropes and Silva connected and then followed up with a combination to flatten Wright and leave him lost on the canvas.

Bruno Silva vs Jordan Wright

Coming up next is Bruno Silva vs Jordan Wright, which is a pretty tasty middleweight bout. Referee is Herb Dean.
