Miguel Herrera pessimistic over Mexico's World Cup prospects

The former manager of the Mexican national team doesn’t believe ‘El Tri’ will make it to the knockout stage if they qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Miguel Herrera pessimistic over Mexico's World Cup prospects

Mexico are on the verge of booking their ticket to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar next winter, even though they lost their last two matches in the qualifiers in CONCACAF. Currently they are in third place with 14 points and there are only six games left of the campaign.

Martino under fire over recent Mexico results

The former manager of the Mexican national team, Miguel Herrera, doesn’t believe that this side has what it takes to make history in the next World Cup under Gerardo Martino. The Argentine manager has been criticized for the latest results in the qualifiers, following back-to-back defeats against the USMNT and Canada.

Gerardo Martino has a winning record with the Mexico national team, but in this country a defeat against a rival puts the manager under pressure. We see it in the Liga MX when a team loses two or three games and they part ways with the manager. So it is no different with the national team and that's the reality in Mexico, we can’t change that mentality,” Herrera said during an interview with Telemundo.

I think if the Mexico national team is able to fix their problems in the next qualifiers, then they will have a good participation in the next World Cup. But if they continue to play like they have been lately, they will not make it past the group stage,” he added.
