NFL

What is the most points ever scored in an NFL game?

With the Miami Dolphins having recently unloaded on the Denver Broncos, we think it’s time to have a look at the highest scores in the history of the NFL.

When an NFL game approaches 100 points you know it’s been a busy one, but which two teams were involved in the highest points total? We have a look...

You may have caught the game or at least heard the chatter. Either way, the Miami Dolphins in an inspired performance last weekend, put 70 points on the board in what was a NFL Week 3 game against the Denver Broncos, who could only muster 20. Now, while their combined score of 80 was quite something, it actually doesn’t even rank in the top 10 highest scores of all time. That of course brings us to the obvious question: What is the highest combined score of all time? Time to dust off the AS gridiron history books and, as it turns out, no active player was alive when the event took place.

Highest NFL score: Washington vs Giants, Nov. 1966

Washington went on a scoring spree in Nov. 1966 and was on the winning side of the largest total game score against the New York Giants. They were convincing victors...and they were also in their old guise of the Redskins.

The New York Giants were on the wrong end of this monster score of 72-41 (113 total) back on 27 November 1966, a season in which the Big Apple team should’ve been called the NY Minnows. They won just a single game that year and were actually flattered by this scoreline, having been trailing 34-7 at half-time.

Other high scoring NFL games

Second in the list of high scoring games comes significantly more recently. At the end of November 2004, the Cincinnati Bengals played out a tight affair with the Cleveland Browns, winning it 58-48 (106 total). The excitement went right to the end with the Browns leading by four inside the final 10 minutes.

Just a single point behind, on 105 total, comes the 2018 clash between the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs. As you may remember, that season saw Patrick Mahomes named MVP but on 19 November he was unable to match the brilliance of the Rams’ Jared Goff who threw four touchdowns and for a total of 413 yards. What a game that was, going to the wire, and the Chiefs losing out 54-51. Interestingly the Kansas team were on the wrong end of another big one (51-48) to the Seattle Seahawks in November 1983.

Here’s a list of Top 10 highest scoring games (all came during regular season):
