Official: Lorenzo Insigne joins Toronto FC
The Italian playmaker will not renew his contract with Napoli and he will arrive in the summer to the Major League Soccer for the 2022 campaign.
After weeks of negotiations, Toronto FC have finally reached an agreement to sign Lorenzo Insigne for the 2022 Major League Soccer season. The Italian playmaker will leave Napoli after 15 years and play in the MLS during the summer.
Insigne set to arrive in July
Insigne will become the highest paid player in the history of the league and he signed his pre-contract agreement with Toronto for four-years. The 30-year-old is expected to arrive to the Canadian-based team on 1 July of 2022 and he will be added as a designated player pending the approval of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“This is a historic and exciting day for our club,” said Toronto FC President Bill Manning. “Lorenzo is a world class attacking player in the prime of his career. He was a European champion with Italy and has performed on the biggest stages during his club career with Napoli. Lorenzo has the talent to change games. He plays the game with joy and passion, and our fans and supporters are going to love watching him as a member of our team.”
It has been reported that Lorenzo Insigne will make $13 million for each season he spends in Major League Soccer with an added $5 million in bonuses. Toronto will hold the right to extend his contract one more season at the end of the four years.
