49ers 13 vs. 10 Packers summary: Gould FG seals Niners win, stats, and highlights | NFL Playoffs
The San Francisco 49ers are headed to the NFC Championship after knocking off the top seeded Green Bay Packers. A heroic night for the San Fran special teams was capped off by a game winning Robbie Gould field goal so seal the 13-10 victory on the last play of the game.
Niners offense need some help
Kyle Shanahan and the Niners knew the offense was going to need some help from the defense and special teams, but he would have never imagined just how much help he would get from both units in Lambeau on Saturday night.
Jimmy Garoppolo spent much of the week answering questions as to if he would play or not this weekend. He had a bone chip and torn ligaments in this thumb and a sprained throwing shoulder. His numbers weren’t great, and he did throw an interception at the end of the first half but he took a back seat as the defense carried the Niners all night.
Dillon's TD was first and last offensive one
Green Bay came out firing on a frigid night at Lambeu Field. Aaron Rodgers led the Pack on a 10 play, 69 yard drive that ended in an A.J. Dillon six yard touchdown run to give the home side their first and only touchdown of the night.
The Niners started the night with four straight three and outs, and had negative yards midway through the second quarter. The only time they built a drive in the first half was on the last drive of the second quarter. Jimmy G had the Niners in the red zone with under two minutes to go in the half, but threw his only interception of the night into the hands of Adrian Amos.
Rodgers hit Adam Jones on 3rd and 3 on the following series for a gain of 75 to put the Packers in scoring position in the final moments of the half. Mason Crosby’s field goal was blocked by Jimmie Ward to keep the score at 7-0 going into the break.
San Fran field goal break scoreless spell
The third quarter started with a field goal drive after a great kick return from Deebo Samuel. Samuel ended up with 44 yards receiving and 39 on the ground to go along with the 45 yard return. Robbie Gould have the Niners their first points of the night on a 29 yard field goal to make it 7-3.
The game would stay 7-3 until early in the fourth quarter when the Packers compiled on one of their best drives of the night, but were stopped inside the 10 yard line.
The defense kept hope for the Niners by only allowing a field goal on that possession and keeping San Francisco to within a touchdown.
Special teams saves the day
San Francisco marched down to inside the 20 midway through the fourth quarter, but they were stopped on 4th and 1 for their second red zone turnover of the day. But the special teams would save day when Talanoa Hufanga picked up a blocked punt and ran it six yards into the endzone to tie the game.
Rodgers and the Packers were held to three and out on the next possession, and that would be the last time Green Bay had the ball.
It took Jimmy G and the Niners nine plays and 44 yards to put Gould with in his field goal range. Gould drained the 45 yard field goal as time expired to keep his playoff streak to 20/20.
Garoppolo passed for just 131 yards on 11/19 passing while Aaron Rodgers was 20-29 for 225 yards. Rodgers is now 0-4 against the 49ers in the playoffs, while San Fran go to the NFC Championship for the second time in three years.
The Niners will have to wait until tomorrow to know their opponent. It will either be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the Los Angeles Rams meeting San Francisco in the NFC Championship.
“Special teams obviously hurt us, taking points off the board and giving them points," said Rodgers after the defeat. "In crucial, critical situations, we had obviously some issues.”
Others off the pitch were less than measured in their outcry as calls for the head of special teams coach, Maurice Drayton, grow.
Gould with the game winner to stay a perfect 20/20 in the playoffs.
With the offense nearly non existent ,it was Talanoa Hufanga coming to the rescue to tie the game up
This goal to go stand kept the Niners in the game. If they give up a TD an go two touchdowns down, the game is all but over.
They got the big defensive play, and this was San Fran's big special teams play. Well, the first big special teams play.
Jimmy G drove the Niners all the way down the field, but had the drive cut short by this Amos pick in the redzone.
Dillon scored on the opening drive of the night. It would be the only Packers touchdown of the game.
The special teams save the day for the 49ers! The blocked FG at half, and then the blocked punt for a touchdown, and the Gould FG to seal the game. What a night it was for a Niners team that had 212 total yards.
GAME OVER!!! NINERS WIN!!!
Gould got it!!! He drills it from 45 yards and the Niners are moving on to the NFC Championship!!!
So here we go. It all comes down to Robbie Gould. Can he keep his post season career perfect with his 20th make in 20 attempts?
Deebo on the run from the shot gun and he picks up the first down on 3rd and 7. He limps off the field, but what a performance it has been from Samuel.
3rd and 7 coming up for the Niners and they will take a timeout on the biggest play of the night.
The Packers have used their final timeout before the Niners face 3rd and 7.
First down Niners after a 14 yard completion to Samuel. SF are in Packers territory with under 1:20 to go.
We are at the Two Minute Warning and the Niners have the ball at their own 45.
Just a bit of a teaser.. Robbie Gould has never missed a FG in the playoffs. He's a perfect 19/19. The snow is picking up and the field conditions are getting slick.
Garoppolo hits Kittle on the slant for the first down on the opening play of the drive.
Rodgers is almost picked!!! It's strange to see Aaron Rodgers struggling at Lambeau in the playoffs. Usually this is where he takes over the game, but the Packers go three and out and the Niners will have the ball back with under 3:30 to go in the final quarter.
San Francisco finally get their touchdown and it comes on a blocked punt returned for a TD
TOUCHDOWN!!!
The punt is blocked by Willis and recovered by Hufanga who takes it into the endzone to tie the game!!!
We are all square with 4:41 to go in the fourth quarter.
The Niners pass rush gets to Rodgers to end the drive, and SF will get it back with under 5 minutes to go.
I thought they would want to run the ball, but the Packers throw it on 2nd and 8
The name of the game for the Pack is run, run and run. They need to run the ball and run the clock so they can go running into the NFC title game.
TURNOVER ON DOWN!!!
Mitchell is stopped on 4th and 1!! The Packers D comes up with the biggest play of the night. Turnover on downs from the GB with 6:10 to go.
Big decision coming up for Shanahan. 4th and short from inside the 20.
Play of the night for Jimmy G and the Niners. On 3rd and 11 Garoppolo makes a perfect throw right on the numbers for Kittle for a first down.
Here come the Niners, down by 7, with 11:23 to go, and to what this point has been a very inefficient offense.
SF started their final drive of the first half with the same field position. That led to a great drive, but it ended in an intercepiton.
FIELD GOAL PACKERS!!!
Rodgers is sacked by Armstead on third down and the Niners defense comes up with a big stand yet again. Crosby hits the short FG to extend the lead.
Packers lead by a touchdown with 11:27 left in the fourth quarter.
The Rodgers pass to Lazard is like a hand off for Aaron Rodgers. What a luxury to have that option if you're Matt LaFluer.
The Niners have done a great job keeping the offense in the game, and they will need to do it again on this drive. Holding GB to a FG would be a win for SF.
This drive looks very similar to the first drive of the game where the Packers went down the field and scored after a couple of Adams catches.
We are on to the fourth quarter in Lambeau!
The Pack are going back to the running game and it's got them into SF territory.
Garoppolo was fortunate not to be picked off and then got wrapped up in the backfield on third down to give the ball right back to the Packers.
You get the feeling this game is going to be decided by a turnover. Each team will have to be very careful over the next 20+ minutes
San Fran's defense picks up where they left off. They force a three and out in GB's first drive of the second half.
FIELD GOAL NINERS!!!
Gould splits the uprights on a 29 yard attempt. But penalties kept the Niners out of the endzone for the second time tonight.
Green Bay leads 7-3 with 8:13 to go in the third quarter.
Scary sight for SF fans as Deebo stays on the ground after getting tackled short of the marker on third and long. We will keep you posted on any news on the Samuel injury.
A personal foul on Mitchell for offensive facemask back the Packers up to 2nd and 14 instead of 1st and Goal.
That's the second flag the Niners have had that has crushed their chances to punch the ball into the endzone.
The Niners are in the red zone after an 18 yard Deebo reception. Deebo is a gamer. Everytime the SF has needed a big play this season Samuel is there.
It has started to snow in Green Bay, how could that affect the game thorughout the next two quarters?
We are underway fin the second half, and the Niners get a big boost from Deebo on the 45 yard return to midfield.
Rodgers is 12/16 for 170 yards, while Jimmy G is 3/9 for 43 yards and an INT.
Adam Jones has 120 yards receiving after the 75 yard reception, and Adams has five catches for 50 yards.
SF has a total of 58 yards after that first half.
The Niners come up with the blocked FG to keep it at a one possession game
Rodgers to Adams for 75 yards.
Amos with the red zone pick
Dillon with the first and only touchdown of the game.
The Packers pick off Jimmy G in the red zone, Then Rodgers hits Jones for 75 yards to give the Packers a chance to score before the halftime break. A Bosa sack and near fumble recovery by the Niners forces a field goal and Crosby has his kick blocked to bring us to the end of the first half with Green Bay up 7-0.
The Niners have to be feeling quite lucky that they are down by just a touchdown after a half where they had just one productive possession.
INTERCEPTION!!!
The one thing Jimmy G couldn't do in the final minute, he evades the rush, extends the play but is picked off by Amos at the GB 4 yard line.
Devastating holding call on Williams on 1st and Goal. That will back the Niners up to the 18 yard line.
Niners going run again out of the two minute warning. This time to Deebo who takes it up the gut for a first down, that's their 4th first down of the drive and 4th of the night.
What a drive for the Niners, who take it all the way down to the two minute warning. San Fran certaily wanted points on this drive, but you have to think their priority coming into this drive was not giving GB the ball back with a chance to score before the half.
They have done that and more with this long, effective drive, now can they finish it off?
That one pass got the run game started. SF is in Packers territory after the big gain and a couple of nice chunks on the ground by Mitchell
Kittle bringing it down with one hand!!! And of all the passes that haven't been caught, that's the first completion? Will that open the flood gates for the Niners>
Will the Niners get their first first down of the night? Will Jimmy G get his first completetion of the night? This is a big series right here, the Niners need to move the ball a bit just so the Packers don't get the ball with great field position.
The Packers show that they were going for it on 4th and short from around midfield, but they were always looking to draw the Niners offsides.
Good move there by coach LeFleur, who will pin a San Fran team that hasn't been able to move the ball all night.
There's a much needed first down for the Packers, and of course who does Rodgers look for when he needs to move the chains? Adams, of course.
All this talk about the Niners defense, but the Packers D came to play. They have SF's offense with minus 10 yards of total offense.
Rodgers is sacked by Ebukam on third down, and the Niners D does it again!!! The Pack really haven't built up a drive since that first possession.
Is this the Niners time to turn on the offense?
Jimmy G needs to get going. The Packers are going to stuff the box until the Niners can prove they can move the ball through this cold Wisconsin air.
Those two drops by Kittle and Jennings aren't helping things too much. SF punt for the third straight possession.
Green Bay are held to a three and out for the first time tonight. They have had a great response after giving up the touchdown drive to open the game.
The Niners have -6 yards through two drives.
The Niners offense is sturggling to start this game. The defense needs to keep them in this game until Jimmy G and the gang get grooving
PLAY OVERTURNED!!!
After review the ruling on the field is overturned. Aiyuk did not have enough time to take two steps and a football move.
FUMBLE!!!
Can you believe it? The Packers get the ball back two plays after the Lewis fumble after Ayiuk coughs up possession and it's recovered by Barnes who returned it 21 yards to the SF 40.
FUMBLE!!!
We talked about the Niners needing some big special teams plays, but even more than that they will need some game changing defensive plays like they got with that Lewis fumble that was recovered by Greenlaw.
San Fran take over from their own 42 yard line.
Dillon with the opener
First play of Green Bay's second drive and who do they go to? Adams of course. He's already got 4 catches.
Smith with the sack on Jimmy G, and what a welcome back for Smith, who hasn't played since week one.
The Packers couldn't have asked for a better start. TD on the opening drive, and a quick stop of a Niners team who wants to wear out the Green Bay D.
Great return by Hasty, and if the Niners are going to win they will need some big plays with their special teams. That's a good start for San Fran, who start their drive from the 40.
TOUCHDOWN PACKERS!!!
Dillon punches it in to the endzone to cap off a perfect drive led by Rodgers. The 6 yard TD run puts the Pack up 7-0 after the first drive.
Adams already has 3 catches for 35 yards. The Niners need to lock in on him and let anyone else beat them. He had 12 catches in the first matchup betwee these teams.
Rodgers is off to a great start. He hasn't made too many long throws but he's putting his receivers in a great spot to pick up yards after the catch.
Rodgers ready
Broken toe forgotten...
Rodgers to Adams for the first first down of the game, and if there is anyone who knows how to throw in this kind of cold, it's Aaron Rodgers.
We are underway from Green Bay!!! The Packers get the ball first and Aaron Rodgers will lead the Packers on the opening drive of the night.
Uh oh... trouble for SF..
Teams from California are just 2-12 at Lambeau in Dec/Jan, and they are averaging 13 points a game.
According to BEet365.com the Packers are 5.5 point favorites, with the Over/Under set at 47.
We are 15 minutes away from kickoff in Green Bay
I hope those hand warmers are working
Seven months ago there were reports that Rodgers was on his way out of Green Bay, he now has the Packers in a win away from their third NFC Title game in four years.
Stage: Lambeau... Weather: freezing.. Ready? Oh, yea
The Niners are in the house
Here we go...
BENGALS WIN!!!
The early game is all done!! The Bengals are on to the AFC Championship after beating the Tennessee Titans 19-16.
Adams went off in the early matchup
The Packers beat the Niners in San Francisco earlier this year. Davante Adams had 12 catches and 132 yards with one touchdown in the Week 4 win. Aaron Rodgers had 261 yards and two touchdowns. Mason Crosby hit a game winning 51 yard field goal as the clock expired to move the Packers to 2-1.
Niners keep winning
The Niners started the year 2-4, and were a team looking for direction with a rookie quarterback that many people expected to get time in his first year out of college. Jimmy Garoppolo has handled the pressure better and better as the weeks go by. San Fran was one of the hottest teams at the end of the season, but still had to beat the Rams on the last week of the regular season to get into the playoffs.
Rodgers almost perfect this season
The Packers have been the best team in the league for every week other than the opening week of the season. They got blown out by the New Orleans Saints to welcome the season, but lost just three games after that. In those three loses Aaron Rodgers played in all four quarters in just once. That loss came against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11. Rodgers is on pace potentially win the NFL MVP for the second straight year.
