Russia's Daniil Medvedev was chasing his first Australian Open men’s singles title in Sunday's final against Rafa Nadal, but the Spaniard came out on top to win his 21st major singles title.

Nadal claims 21st major singles title

US Open champion Medvedev raced into a two-set lead on Rod Laver Arena, and looked firmly on course to prevent the Spaniard from overtaking Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the men’s game’s most successful player.

However, Nadal fought back in Melbourne to defeat Medvedev 2-6 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4 7-5 and win his second Australian Open title in a thrilling battle lasting five hours and 24 minutes.

The 35-year-old has now moved above Federer and Djokovic with his 21st major title.

Djokovic the men's top dog at Australian open

Medvedev was back in the Australian Open final a year on from his 2021 defeat to Djokovic, who is the most decorated men’s player in the tournament’s history.

The Serb, who was unable to defend his 2021 title after Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke cancelled the unvaccinated 34-year-old’s visa earlier this month, has won nine singles titles in Melbourne.
