What are the most points scored during a Super Bowl game?
The Chiefs and 49ers are both clearly capable of putting points on the board, but will they be able to approach the Super Bowl record, and just what is it?
The Super Bowl showdown between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs is nearly upon us, with the Niners listed as slight favorites. Of course as we know, what’s written on paper means nothing when it comes to the field. So, just what can we expect from this rematch of 2020′s big game, one which the Chiefs managed to win? Will it be a high scoring affair, and if so just how many points can these two post?
Offense is key
The strength of the offense has spelled the difference many times in the Super Bowl. The 2021 final between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs was a perfect example of this, as Tom Brady led the Bucs to a 31-9 rout of KC. Yet, even so, the final score was still 35 points short of the Super Bowl record. In Super Bowl XXIX which took place in 1995, quarterback Steve Young steered the San Francisco 49ers to a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Joe Robbie (now Hard Rock) Stadium in Miami. The two-time NFL MVP turned Hall of Famer threw for 325 yards and six touchdowns, leading the offense which racked up 14 points in each of the first three quarters.
To this day, that final combined score of 75 stands as the highest numberer of points scored in a Super Bowl game, but the Niners’ final tally of 49 points in that match is not the highest scored by a team in history. On the other hand, the men in red and gold also hold that record as well. Indeed, it was the Denver Broncos who were subjected to that punishment back in 1990′s Super Bowl XXIV. On that day they were dismantled in a contest that ended 55-10 at the Superdome in New Orleans. Below you can see the list of highest total scores in Super Bowl games.
