SUPER BOWL LVI

What are the most points scored during a Super Bowl game?

The Los Angeles Rams are favored to win their Super Bowl matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, and scores are predicted to run in the 20s, and even the 30s.

Update:
The Los Angeles Rams are favored to win their Super Bowl matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals, and the scores are predicted to run in the 20s, and maybe even the 30s.

The Super Bowl showdown between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals is nearly upon us, with the Rams favored to clinch the trophy. Scores are expected to be in the 20s and even the 30s, with the much-talked-about matchup between quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow taking centerstage.

Though both sides are expected to go back and forth on the scoreboard, so far, there have been no fearless forecasts about the game reaching record-high tallies.

Other Super Bowl stories:

Offense is key

The strength of the offense has spelled the difference many times in the Super Bowl. Last year’s final between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs was an example of this, as Tom Brady led the Bucs to a 31-9 rout of KC.

That final score is 35 points short of the Super Bowl record. In Super Bowl XXIX which took place in 1995, quarterback Steve Young steered the San Francisco 49ers to a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Joe Robbie (now Hard Rock) Stadium in Miami.

The two-time NFL MVP threw for 325 yards and six touchdowns, leading the offense which racked up 14 points in each of the first three quarters.

49ers: Scoring machine

The combined score of 75 is the highest number of points scored in a Super Bowl game, but the 49ers’ final tally of 49 in that match is not the highest in history. This record, however, also belongs to San Francisco. In Super Bowl XXIV held in 1990, the team trounced the Denver Broncos 55-10 at Superdome in New Orleans.

If the Rams perform as predicted on Sunday, they will likely have a better result than they did in their last Super Bowl appearance in Feb. 2019, where they ended up having the lowest score on record, losing 13-3 to the New England Patriots for a total of 16 points. The score of three is the least productive offensive output by any team in the Super Bowl, and the Rams are tied with the Miami Dolphins for this cringe-worthy record.

Here is a list of the highest-scoring Super Bowl games.
