The United States has been hit with severe weather warnings over the past week as the threat of winter storms reaches the mainland. But out at sea things are just as volatile as a series of clips from around the world has shown.

Waimea Bay wipe-outs
Waimea Bay, Hawaii is recognised as one for the best spots in the world to catch truly awe-inspiring waves, but do so at your own risk. In this drone-recorded video a massive swell off the coast of Hawaii catches numerous surfers off-guard, resulting in some pretty incredible wipe-outs along the golden shores.
Olympic star Italo Ferreira meets Neymar in Paris
Surf legend Italo Ferreira is known as the first Olympic champion in the history of surfing and his global reputation clearly opens doors. After a brief trip to Barcelona to record a new documentary for the Surf Channel, Ferreira then heads to Paris to meet another sporting icon. The 27-year-old Brazilian, winner of the 2019 World Surf League, met with his footballing compatriot Neymar Jr.
Leti Canals sticks a huge wave in Lanzarote
The Basque surfer Leti Canals spent a couple of weeks training with José María Cabrera in Lanzarote recently. During her time there she attempted the formidable El Quemao, a super-sized wave that surges over the top of a coral reef.
"If you fail you go to the reef,” Canals explained in a recent interview but, as is evidenced here, she nailed the massive wave.
Drone shows Coast Guard take on awesome wave
Giant waves are usually reserved for surfers and danger lovers, but incredible footage captured on a drone shows the California Coast Guard taking on the elements. The video was taken over Ocean Beach in San Francisco, California as a Coast Guard clatters into big waves to the soundtrack of Led Zeppelin.
