A late goal from substitute Anthony Elanga rescued a 1-1 draw for Manchester United at Atlético Madrid in their Champions League last-16 first-leg clash on Wednesday.
United, looking disjointed and lacking spark, were cornered from the start by a relentless Atleti, who opened the scoring after seven minutes with a brilliant header by João Félix from Renan Lodi's cross.
Atletico had many opportunities to extend their lead and hit the post twice but were punished by a defensive mistake which gifted the ball to Bruno Fernandes 10 minutes from time.
The Portuguese playmaker found Elanga behind the defensive line and the 19-year-old striker scored with a precise cross shot, one of only two United efforts on target in the whole game
And there's the whistle! 1-1 it ends, and United will be by far the happier of the two sides with that result.
Lingard! Atleti fail to clear and the ball falls to the sub, who hits a low shot that forces Oblak into a sprawling save.
Ronaldo rises at the far post and nods back into the area and it takes all of Kondogbia's strength to hold off two United players and get the ball out of danger.
Telles wins a corner for United
Four minutes added.
United have a throw in Atleti territory as Oblak comes out to mop up.
Griezmann! Hits the bar! Lovely weighted strike from the Frenchman but it smacks off the woodwork to safety.

Simeone is urging his side forward. Away goals don't count this season of course but he wants another to take to Old Trafford.
Luis Suárez is still on the bench for the home side. Surely worth a roll of the dice.

Bruno Fernandes finds the Swedish teenager, who has only just come one, with a defence-splitter and he finishes coolly across Oblak!

Fred goes down under a challenge on the edge of the area and despite Atleti's protestations, Ronaldo will have a pop from here.
Changes for Atleti, Lodi and Félix off to an ovation, Lemar and Griezmann on to equally huge cheers.
Kondogbia! The midfielder leathered that one on the half-volley but it was always on the rise.
Lodi is still chugging away and wins a corner for Atleti with what looks like his last touch of the game.
Félix again tries the exceptional with an overhead from distance but he doesn't connect and it pings harmlessly out.
Lodi back on for now, possibly just to allow times for a sub to warm up. Atleti have a corner in the meantime.
Shame for Lodi as the wing back drops to the turf with what looks like a muscle issue. He's had the best game of his Atleti career this evening.
Triple change for United: Wan-Bissaka for Lindelof, Matic for Pogba, Alex Telles for Shaw.

Jan Oblak has endured a miserable season his own incredible standards. He hasn't had to make a save yet this evening.
Lindelof gets his name on the naughty list for a trip on Félix to prevent a break.
United are seeing more of the ball now but there aren't too many avenues through the Atleti back line.
Sancho gets a rare touch but does little with it. Rashford tries his luck from distance but puts it into the stands. Atleti will be happy enough with those sorts of efforts.
Savic! Good defending from the veteran, who gets across and does enough to prevent Fernandes from getting a sniff of goal.
Luke Shaw goes into the book for a trip on Vrsaljko.
And that rather sums up United this evening. Fernandes gets the ball in a half-promising position and sends a wild ball clean out into the stands.
Another corner for Atleti as Llorente curls a cross in and Lindelof clears.
Atleti start as they left off, winning balls in midfield, stopping United getting forward and hitting fast from inside the opposition half.

And there's the whistle! Atleti go into the break deservedly ahead and United have a lot to think about at half time with the home side running rings around them at the moment.

Off the bar! Lodi again gets away on the left and finds Llorente on the far side. The midfielder didn't have much time to react but hits Lindelof and the ball bounces up onto the stick!
Rashford crosses, Vrsaljko intervenes, Ronaldo grumbles. He is not enjoying United's performance in the first 45.
Kondogbia robs the ball in midfield again and charges forward but he can't find the final ball to Correa.
Ronaldo is down after a challenge from Llorente, the Spain international sweeping the forward's leg, and Ronaldo is not happy. It looks like he might have pulled something there too.
United are now doubling up on Lodi on the Atleti left.
It seems like there are two Geoffrey Kondogbias on the pitch tonight. He is absolutely everywhere, including up Ronaldo's nose, the Portuguese making his displeasure known to the ref.
United stuck in Lodi again! The Brazilian is on fire tonight and plucks a ball from the air with a glorious touch, turns Lindelof and whacks a shot into the side netting.
Simeone going mental on the touchline, looks like he'd like to it himself... in the end Llorente delivers and it's cleared easily but the first defender.
Very dangerous free kick for Atleti on the edge of the area...
De Gea! Correa is clean through after nicking the ball off Varane and the former Atleti keeper is out like a whippet. Correa was adjudged to have fouled Varane anyway, but good anticipation from De Gea.
Félix! Lodi delivers another beauty but the Portuguese has his back to goal and tries to clip it over his head. It doesn't come off but another piece of great work from the wing back, who has the run of the United right side.
Ooooooh, big decision! Kondogbia robs Fred in the United half and is bearing down on goal when he's pulled back by the ref. Looked like he got the ball cleanly but the Brazilian went down and the ref gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Atleti's press is working a treat at the moment and United are on the ropes every time the home side push up, almost leading to an error from De Gea, which the home fans rather enjoyed.
Kondogbia, who has been excellent in the holding role in the opening exchanges, breaks up another attack and launches one with just two touches, which is something he does better than most. An excellent signing for Atleti and an archetypal Simeone player.
United with 61 percent possession on the 20-minute mark, but Atleti with three shots to the visitors' one.
United finally enjoying some possession in the Atleti half but it's cut short as Fred steamrollers Correa.
Fernandes! Rashford, Ronaldo and the Portuguese combine, the latter hitting a decent enough shot that clips Jiménez on its way through and is out for a corner.
Atleti are all over United now, first Félix then Vrsaljko wreaking havoc on the visiting defence, who hack clear in extremis.
There's a less than warm reception for De Gea as makes a regulation clearance as well.
Ronaldo gets the ball, Ronaldo is hit by a wall of jeers from the stands. He has made Atleti suffer down the years.
Renan Lodi delivers a glorious cross and the Portuguese meets it with a diving header that hits the inside of the post and thumps into the other side of De Gea's goal! Simeone enjoyed that!

Atleti are snapping at United's heels, nicking the ball off two napping midfielders but the visiting back four mop up. Félix gets a chance to run at the defence but thrashes a shot well wide. Good start from the hosts.
Atleti win a corner off João Felix, Maguire gets a head to it but the clearance drops to Jiménez, whose shot is blocked! The Metropolitiano was on its feet there, the smell of an early goal in the home fans' nostrils.
And we're off!
The Champions League anthem blares out - to a chorus of jeers from the stadium - and we're about to get underway.
The warm-ups have concluded and we're about 10 minutes from kick-off. Big night for both teams, whose only viable chance of silverware this season now is to win the Champions League.
Still, only Robert Lewandowski has scored more goals than Ángel Correa in 2022...
All set in the United dressing room. Reports also coming in that McTominay didn't make the trip to Spain today as he was taken ill.

Rangnick has gone more or less as expected, perhaps the only surprise the inclusion of Fred in place of Scott McTominay, with Raphael Varane back in defence and Sancho retaining his place.

Simeone has opted for João Felix and Ángel Correa up top, Luis Suárez and Antoine Griezmann having to make do with the bench. Geoffrey Kondogbia comes into midfield with Lodi and Sime Vrsaljko acting as wing backs.
Rangnick in rude health
The Manchester boss meanwhile will be missing back-up stopper Tom Heaton and Edinson Cavani, but otherwise has a full squad to choose from. Jadon Sancho is likely to start alongside Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford after a decent showing against Leeds with Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba pulling the strings in midfield.
Koke, Carrasco out for Atlético
Simeone also faces issues on the night, with captain Koke out after picking up an injury against Osasuna at the weekend and Yannick Carrasco suspended. Antoine Griezmann hasn't played since December buy may make the bench here, with Matheus Cunha and Daniel Wass also unavailable.
Old foes, not so familiar faces
Manchester United have not faced Atletico Madrid in European competition since the 1991-92 Cup Winners' Cup last 16, a tie the Spanish side won 4-1 on aggregate as Luis Aragonés got the better of Alex Ferguson.
We imagine Simeone would take that after being dumped out of the Copa and left hopelessly adrift in LaLiga.
This will be David de Gea's first competitive meeting with Atleti since he left for United in 2011. He probably didn't imagine he would win fewer league titles than his old club in the decade to follow, but that's another story.
De Gea can at least step onto the pitch at the Wanda Metropolitano on Wednesday knowing he can claim to be one of the best in the business again based on form – a claim that opposite number Jan Oblak certainly can't make.
Ronaldo returns to haunt Atlético
Perhaps the most surpising aspect of Rangnick's reign has been his inability to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese endured a six-game run without scoring before finding the net against Brighton a week ago, his worst drought since 2009. However, the Portuguese does love a game against Atlético, scoring 25 times in 35 appearances with a win-loss record of 17-9 and nine draws.
United meanwhile have been solid under Ralf Rangnick, losing just once inside 90 minutes in 13 games since the German took at over at Old Trafford . What they have not been is particularly entertaining for the most part, although the 4-2 win at Leeds did display some of the attacking verve for which the club is synomymous.
It should be an interesting game this evening, if not perhaps the sort of European encounter we might expect from two heavyweights of the game. Atlético have been extremely hard to predict with Diego Simeone attempting to install a different style of play at the Metropolitano, with limited success. The Rojiblancos have lost eight of their last 15 and have been racking up some very un-Simeone scorelines - 4-3 against Getafe, 4-2 against Barcelona, 3-2 at Valencia and 3-0 at fortress El Sadar - and that's just in the past month. One thing that can be said about Atlético this season: they are no longer a bit dull to watch.
