Former UFC heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez, was arrested in San Jose on Monday, on suspicion of attempted murder after firing shots at a vehicle.

Cain Velasquez chose to take the law into his hands

Velasquez is reported to have been shooting at a man he believed had molested a child related to the 39-year-old, according to several news sites. The man, however, was in a vehicle with his stepfather, who was struck by the bullet. According to the San Jose Police Department, he is expected to survive his injuries.

The ex-MMA American fighter is currently being held without bail at the Santa Clara County jail. Velasquez is set for a court date on Wednesday, with the motive of the incident still under investigation.

Who is Cain Velasquez?

Velasquez (14-3) has been considered one of MMA’s greatest heavyweight fighters for a long time. Unfortunately for the American though, several injuries ended his career prematurely after derailing his prime years as a fighter.

The Mexican-born went on a flawless 9-0 run, that included a first-round knockout of Pride and UFC star Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, to capture the UFC heavyweight championship by beating Brock Lesnar through first-round TKO. Velasquez also claimed his first title defense against Junior dos Santos and defeated him in their trilogy bout.

Velasquez only fought three times, with his first bout back in Oct., 2013, and last in 2019. He officially retired from Mixed Martial Arts in Oct. of 2019, after repeated knee injuries, including in his last MMA fight with Francis Ngannou. Velasquez lost the fight via knockout less than thirty seconds into round one.

That same year, Velasquez subsequently transitioned to a professional wrestling career, first in Mexico for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, then in WWE or World Wrestling Entertainment. The California native entered a short program with UFC foe Brock Lesnar in a brief WWE stretch, where Lesnar quickly defended his Championship.

In April 2020, Velasquez was released from his WWE contract because of budget cuts that were a result of the covid-19 pandemic.

What is Cain Velasquez doing now?

Velasquez reportedly coaches and trains at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, CA. The location is reported to be less than five miles from where the shooting took place.
