Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Bürki set for MLS move in 2023

St. Louis City SC will become the 29th franchise in Major League Soccer and will make their debut in the 2023 regular season. The newly formed MLS team are already preparing to announce their first signings and according to Transfermarkt, are in advanced talks with Roman Bürki to join the club in the summer.

The 31-year-old joined Borussia Dortmund in 2015 and his contract expires on 30 June 2023. Bürki was the first option for many campaigns, but this year he has been relegated to a more secondary role with Gregor Kobel seeing the most minutes. The last time he played for the Bundesliga side was in May because he fell behind Kobel, Marwin Hitz and Luca Unbehaun.

The deal will be finalized soon

The Swiss goalkeeper had two offers during the January transfer window, one from Galatasaray and another from FC Lorient, but no agreement was reached in the end. Talks with St. Louis are reportedly very advanced and soon the MLS franchise will confirm the news. This deal was possible thanks to St. Louis sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel, who used to work for Hoffenheim and Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The 2023 MLS campaign will start around late February and it is expected that Bürki will join the MLS side during preseason in mid-January. The Switzerland international has made 232 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in seven seasons.
