Galatasaray 1-2 Barcelona: summary

Barcelona fought back to win 2-1 at Galatasaray on Thursday and advance to the Europa League quarter-finals 2-1 on aggregate after a scoreless draw in the first leg.

Brazilian defender Marcão gave the Turkish side the lead in the 28th minute with a diving header from a corner.

Pedri scored the equaliser for Barcelona with a fine individual goal, receiving a pass from Ferran Torres and leaving two defenders on the floor with great skill before tucking home from close range.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang headed against the post before the break and the former Arsenal striker put Barca ahead three minutes into the second half with a close-range header after two magnificent stops by Galatasaray goalkeeper Inaki Pena who is on loan from the Spanish club.

Barça ran down the clock, infuriating the home crowd who started throwing bottles and plastic cups onto the field and the referee stopped the game for a few minutes while the Galatasaray players tried to calm their fans down. (Reuters)

Barcelona will be joined in the draw by Rangers, Braga and Atalanta.

Champions League quarter-final draw: date, times, how to stream online

The draws for the Champions League and Europa League quarters will take place tomorrow. Here's how you can folllow them.

And there's the whistle! Barça are through to the quarter-finals of the Europa League!

Dembélé tries his luck from distance but misses the target. Barça back on the ball and looking to keep it that way as time runs out for Gala.

Morutan is picked up for a handball in midfield and Barça eat up a few more precious seconds.

Memphis! The Dutchman plays a neat one-two with Alba and flashes a shot just wide of the upright.

Ferran! The forward is through and crashes a shot into the bar but the flag was up anyway.

Six minutes added!

Barça win a free kick as Bayram brings Memphis down. The visitors are in no hurry to take this.

Dervisoglu almost gets away on the left but has to settle for a throw.

The Barça defender eventually gets his throw-in away and we're back underway.

Alba gets a caution for kicking the ball into the crowd.

Play is halted as Jordi Alba is pelted with a bottle and some other objects on the far side. Alba whacks the ball into the crowd and Gala's players confront the Barça defender. Players from both sides asking the crowd to cool it down a little. Muslera is off the bench calling for calm.

Kerem! Another good run from the winger who tries to get the ball to Mohamed but it hits Araújo and ricochets into the gloves of Ter Stegen.

Free kick for Barcelona a fair distance out, Alba sends it in but Nelsson heads it clear.

Memphis on for Auba as Lenglet replaces Piqué.

Kerem! The winger gets away on the left and squares for Morutan but the ball is just too far in front of the Romanian and Barça escape.

Pedri into the book for a late challenge on Taylan, who stays down.

Kerem jumps on a mistake from Ter Stegen and thinks he has a free kick as he appears to be caught in the face by Piqué but the ref waves play on.

Mohamed! The substitute didn't have much of an angle there but had a go anyway, flashing a shot behind Ter Stegen's goal.

And that's the end of Babel's evening as he is replaced by Halil Dervisoglu. Olimpiu Morutan also on for the home side, Cicaldau making way.

Dembélé hits his effort straight into the wall and Babel goes down as he takes it full in the face.

Van Aanholt goes in the book for cliambing all over Gavi and Barça have a free kick on the edge of the area.

Another change for Barça as De Jong heads off to be replaced by Gavi.

Gala appeal for a penalty as Cicâldau goes down in the area under a challenge from Alba but the ref is having none of it.

Change for Gala as Gomis makes way for Egypt international Mostafa Mohamed.

Van Aanholt! What a strike from the Dutchman! It looked speculative at best from that distance but fizzes just over the bar.

Araújo on for Barcelona to replace the USA international.

A wonderful challenge from Dest to deny Kerem a run at goal but the Barça defender appears to have twanged something and Xavi may be forced into a change here.

Peña pulls off a fine double save to deny Busquets and Pedri but Auba is there to jump on the rebound and he strokes home from close range to give Barça the lead!

Gooooooooooooooooooool! Aubameyang!

It looks as though Van Aanholt will have to go off after a collision with Dest. Looks as though he pulled something.

We're back underway!

14 attempts in the first half, seven from either side, with three on target for the hosts and just the one from Barça.

And there's the half! Entertaining stuff so far, Marcão opening the scoring with a glorious header before Pedri's solo effort levels the affair.

Auba! Dest floats a ball into the area and the Gabon forward lands a header on the crossbar!

Alba sends a ball in towards Auba but Van Aanholt guides the Barça forward away from it.

Three minutes added.

Trouble for the home side as Kerem goes down clutching his leg.

Both players are fine to continue but two of Barça's defensive line are on yellows now, which won't have escaped the attention of Gala's forwards.

García will join Busquets in the book for a horrible challenge on Marcão that has left both players on the turf in agony.

What a cool head from the youngster, who picks the ball up in the area, takes a touch, pauses to trick a defender flying in, picks his spot and fires past Peña to level the scores!

Gooooooooooooooooooool! Pedri!

Pedri goes on a mazy run through the Gala back line but flashes his shot wide. Good work from the Spain international but Barça are yet to get a shot on target.

The Nef Stadium is rocking now!

Pedri is unhappy as he gets a slap in the chops trying to lose his marker but the ref didn't see it.

There's a very UEFA pause in the game as another corner flag is located, but it's got the wrong pattern on it, so another is required.

He also goes in the book for booting a corner flag clean off the pitch, which he meets with a smile. That was his first goal of the season, and what a time to get it!

The Brazilian defender, Gala's captain, meets a corner with a diving header that he guides inside Ter Stegen's near post! Gala have the lead!

Goooooooooooooooool! Marcão!

Bookies everywhere groan as Busquets picks up the first card of the game for a clumsy lunge on Alexandru Cicâldau.

Kerem gets a run at the Barça defence but Dest tracks him well and García comes across to snuff out the danger.

Barcelona are bossing possession but Gala have been the more dangerous side, racking up five shots to the visitors' three so far.

Gomis attempts to turn Garcia on the halfway line and the Barça defender brings the Frenchman down.

De Jong delivers and Piqué gets a glancing head to it but can't guide his effort on target.

Barcelona have a free kick right on the edge of the area, on the touchline, as Van Aanholt brings Dest down.

There are some half-hearted appeals for a penalty as De Jong bursts into the area and is met with a shoulder but the ref waves play on.

Babel! The Dutch winger gets clear on the right and hits a low shot that doesn't really trouble Ter Stegen but warns the Barça keeper's gloves.

Kerem, who scored both goals in the 2-1 victory over Besiktas on Monday, delights the crowd with some wonderful skill on the far side.

De Jong! The midfielder is through and only has Peña to beat but fires wide! What a chance for the visitors.

Ferran! The Barça forward bounces out of a challenge with Boey and fires over from the edge of the area.

Gomis! The forward didn't know too much about that as the ball hits him in the shoulder and spirals harmlessly over.

Gomis! Gala break and the Frenchman shrugs Garcia off to get a shot away, which is blocked by Alba. Corner for the home side now.

Barça take it short and it comes to nothing, Jordi Alba floating a ball straight out for a goal kick.

Ferran and Pedri try to make something happen around the Gala area and Barça win a corner.

It's a fairly scrappy start and Eric Garcia puts Ter Stegen in a spot of bother with a weak back pass.

We're off! Barcelona get the ball rolling in Istanbul!

The teams are out now and the Europa League anthem blares out across the Nef Stadium.

Barcelona's unbeaten run

Barcelona are unbeaten in their last 10 in all competitions and have scored four times in five of those games.

There will be quite the atmosphere in the Nef Stadium this evening, an arena famous for its welcomes for opposing teams.

The warm-ups are underway at the Nef Stadium and we're about 15 minutes from kick-off now.

Barcelona vs Galatasary: head to head

The two sides haven't met since the 2002-03 Champions League group stage, where Barça won 3-1 at Camp Nou and 2-0 on Gala's turf. In the 2021-02 season Barça won 1-0 away but were held to a 2-2 draw at home. The sides met again in the group stage in 1994-05, Gala winning 2-1 at home and Barça by the same scoreline in the return game. The previous season Barça won 3-0 at home and the away game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Galatasaray starting XI confirmed

A bit of a surprise from Torrent, who leaves Mostafa Mohamed out for thisone. There's no place for Feghouli either, the Algerian having been substituted at half time against Besiktas, with an injury we assume. Bafetimbi Gomis will lead the line with support from Kerem Akturkoglu and Babel.

Barcelona starting XI confirmed

Xavi has gone for his preferred starting XI with Auba, Adama and Ferran Torres up top, Memphis having to make do with a place on the bench. Sergiño Dest retains his place with Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets and Pedri in midfield.

Barcelona: 0-0 precedents

Barça have gone into a European second leg at 0-0 three times before. The 2000-01 UEFA Cup, when Liverpool won the game 1-0; the 2007-08 Champions League, with Manchester United going through 1-0, and the 2008-09 Champions League against Chelsea, Andrés Iniesta famously sending Barça through to the final on away goals with his 93rd-minute strike.

There are of course no away goals in European competition this season.

Barcelona team news

Xavi has several players out but those are mostly on the fringes of the first team: Umtiti, Abde, Wague, Sergi Roberto and Balde. Dani Alves was left out of the Europa League squad list and won't be available today while Ansu Fati is still feeling his way back from a lengthy injury lay off.

Galatasaray team news

There'll be no reunion with his old club for Arda Turan, who is out injured. Other than the Turkey midfielder, Torrent has no injury issues for this one and may well name an unchanged side from the previous leg at Camp Nou.

Xavi's Barcelona in stellar form

It is quite the contrast to Xavi’s resurgent Barcelona, who did excellent business in the January window and have climbed to third in LaLiga on the back of a 12-game unbeaten run stretching back to early December. Barça have also put four past their opponents on four occasions in their past six Liga matches, against Atlético, Valencia, Athletic and Osasuna. More pertinently for Xavi heading into Thursday’s game, his side did the same to Napoli in the away leg of the previous round to secure their place in the last 16 after a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.

However, Galatasaray’s domestic implosion has yet to translate to the continental stage, where Torrent’s side remain unbeaten in the Europa League with five wins and six draws including the qualifiers. Goals remain an issue for the Turkish side though – they've averaged one a game in the Europa League but four of those came in 90 minutes against Marseille in the group stage.

Galatasaray's struggles

Things haven't been going well for Gala this season. The side finished second last year under Fatih Terim but sacked their long-standing coach in January. The Turkish giants are 11th in the Süper Lig, failed to get past the second qualifying round of the Champions League after a 7-2 drubbing by PSV and were dumped out of the Turkish Cup by second-tier Denizlispor.

There will be a couple of familiar faces for the visitors in the Gala team today with Iñaki Peña set to play against his parent club, the keeper on a season-long loan in Turkey from Camp Nou. Sofiane Feghouli, formerly of Valencia, will be providing his trickery in midfield while Netherlands internationals Ryan Babel and Patrick van Aanholt will line up against compatriots Luuk and Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.

It's fair to say it was a result few expected given the form of the two sides: It was the first time Barcelona had failed to score since the 3-0 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich at the beginning of December. It was also the first and only time that Galatasaray had managed a clean sheet under Domènec Torrent, who replaced Fatih Terim in January
