Galatasaray 1-2 Barcelona: summary

Barcelona fought back to win 2-1 at Galatasaray on Thursday and advance to the Europa League quarter-finals 2-1 on aggregate after a scoreless draw in the first leg.

Brazilian defender Marcão gave the Turkish side the lead in the 28th minute with a diving header from a corner.

Pedri scored the equaliser for Barcelona with a fine individual goal, receiving a pass from Ferran Torres and leaving two defenders on the floor with great skill before tucking home from close range.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang headed against the post before the break and the former Arsenal striker put Barca ahead three minutes into the second half with a close-range header after two magnificent stops by Galatasaray goalkeeper Inaki Pena who is on loan from the Spanish club.

Barça ran down the clock, infuriating the home crowd who started throwing bottles and plastic cups onto the field and the referee stopped the game for a few minutes while the Galatasaray players tried to calm their fans down. (Reuters)

Barcelona vs Galatasary: head to head

The two sides haven't met since the 2002-03 Champions League group stage, where Barça won 3-1 at Camp Nou and 2-0 on Gala's turf. In the 2021-02 season Barça won 1-0 away but were held to a 2-2 draw at home. The sides met again in the group stage in 1994-05, Gala winning 2-1 at home and Barça by the same scoreline in the return game. The previous season Barça won 3-0 at home and the away game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Galatasaray starting XI confirmed

A bit of a surprise from Torrent, who leaves Mostafa Mohamed out for thisone. There's no place for Feghouli either, the Algerian having been substituted at half time against Besiktas, with an injury we assume. Bafetimbi Gomis will lead the line with support from Kerem Akturkoglu and Babel.

as.com

Barcelona starting XI confirmed

Xavi has gone for his preferred starting XI with Auba, Adama and Ferran Torres up top, Memphis having to make do with a place on the bench. Sergiño Dest retains his place with Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets and Pedri in midfield.

Barcelona: 0-0 precedents

Barça have gone into a European second leg at 0-0 three times before. The 2000-01 UEFA Cup, when Liverpool won the game 1-0; the 2007-08 Champions League, with Manchester United going through 1-0, and the 2008-09 Champions League against Chelsea, Andrés Iniesta famously sending Barça through to the final on away goals with his 93rd-minute strike.

There are of course no away goals in European competition this season.

Barcelona team news

Xavi has several players out but those are mostly on the fringes of the first team: Umtiti, Abde, Wague, Sergi Roberto and Balde. Dani Alves was left out of the Europa League squad list and won't be available today while Ansu Fati is still feeling his way back from a lengthy injury lay off.

as.com

Galatasaray team news

There'll be no reunion with his old club for Arda Turan, who is out injured. Other than the Turkey midfielder, Torrent has no injury issues for this one and may well name an unchanged side from the previous leg at Camp Nou.

as.com

Xavi's Barcelona in stellar form

It is quite the contrast to Xavi’s resurgent Barcelona, who did excellent business in the January window and have climbed to third in LaLiga on the back of a 12-game unbeaten run stretching back to early December. Barça have also put four past their opponents on four occasions in their past six Liga matches, against Atlético, Valencia, Athletic and Osasuna. More pertinently for Xavi heading into Thursday’s game, his side did the same to Napoli in the away leg of the previous round to secure their place in the last 16 after a 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.

as.com

However, Galatasaray’s domestic implosion has yet to translate to the continental stage, where Torrent’s side remain unbeaten in the Europa League with five wins and six draws including the qualifiers. Goals remain an issue for the Turkish side though – they've averaged one a game in the Europa League but four of those came in 90 minutes against Marseille in the group stage.

as.com

Galatasaray's struggles

Things haven't been going well for Gala this season. The side finished second last year under Fatih Terim but sacked their long-standing coach in January. The Turkish giants are 11th in the Süper Lig, failed to get past the second qualifying round of the Champions League after a 7-2 drubbing by PSV and were dumped out of the Turkish Cup by second-tier Denizlispor.

as.com

There will be a couple of familiar faces for the visitors in the Gala team today with Iñaki Peña set to play against his parent club, the keeper on a season-long loan in Turkey from Camp Nou. Sofiane Feghouli, formerly of Valencia, will be providing his trickery in midfield while Netherlands internationals Ryan Babel and Patrick van Aanholt will line up against compatriots Luuk and Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay.

as.com

It's fair to say it was a result few expected given the form of the two sides: It was the first time Barcelona had failed to score since the 3-0 Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich at the beginning of December. It was also the first and only time that Galatasaray had managed a clean sheet under Domènec Torrent, who replaced Fatih Terim in January
