Leto for his part, got bumped by surprise pick for Best Actor Javier Bardem playing Desi Arnaz in "Being the Ricardos". Likewise, Denis Villeneuve was snubbed for Best Director for his adptation of the sci-fi epic "Dune" by American author Frank Herbert.

With an impressive 12 nominations, Netflix Inc's dark Western "The Power of the Dog" leads the field of this year's Academy Award contenders, including one for the prestigious best picture gong. Surprise nomination "Drive My Car" is the first Japanese movie to compete for the top prize.
