The United States men’s national team have been dealt a major blow before the start of the final batch of World Cup qualifiers in CONCACAF with the news that Brenden Aaronson has been ruled out due to a knee injury. The 21-year-old got injured on Sunday during the pre-game warm-up ahead of RB Salzburg and Wolfsberg.

Aaronson was scheduled to make the trip to Houston to join squad on Monday and undergo a medical examination to determine the severity of the injury. He then stayed with Salzburg and the bad news was confirmed, with the MRI showing a slight tear in the MCL and he is set to be sidelined for between three and six weeks, but won’t require surgery.

Injury report from the US Soccer Federation

"After reviewing the updated medical information and in consultation with Red Bull Salzburg, we have determined that Brenden Aaronson would not be available to play in the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches,'' the team said in a statement on Monday.

“We were hopeful he would be able to recover in time. Unfortunately, that will not be the case.” This means that Aaronson will miss the last three games of the round-robin tournament against Mexico, Panama and Costa Rica. Aaronson joins Weston McKennie (Juventus), Matt Turner (New England Revolution), Sergiño Dest (FC Barcelona) and Chris Richards (Hoffenheim) on the USMNT injury list.
