Over 14 years with the United States men’s national team, Landon Donovan made 157 appearances across all competitions and scored 57 goals to become the joint leading scorer alongside Clint Dempsey. The former USMNT legend played 17 times against Mexico and he scored a total of six goals to become the all-time leading scorer in CONCACAF’s biggest rivalry.
The most important goal against Mexico
One of the goals that will never be forgotten in the history of Mexican soccer is the one Donovan scored in the round of 16 of the 2002 World Cup. The USMNT legend was playing in his first World Cup with the United States and scored the second goal of a historic 2-0 win against Mexico to send them back home.
The other five goals came in exhibition matches (2), World Cup qualifiers (1) and Gold Cup tournaments (2). Donovan is one of the most accomplished players in the history of the United States, participating in three World Cup’s and becoming the all-time leader in assists for the USMNT with 58.
