Can Will Smith lose his 2022 Oscar after hitting Chris Rock?

The post-Oscars 2022 headlines should have been about the talented award winners and their contributions to the movie world. Although they will remain part of film-making history, they were somewhat upstaged by Will Smith and Chris Rock, the latter getting a hard slap from the man who won Best Actor on the night.

As well as telling Rock to fuck off, after the comedian made a joke about Smith’s wife, the former Fresh Prince hit him in the face. And some people have been asking if the award could be taken away from him for that conduct.

Could Will Smith be arrested for punching Chris Rock?

It was a 'mixed' evening for Will Smith at the Oscars, picking up his first Academy Award for Best Actor but only after he had walked onto the stage to confront Chris Rock. Smith appeared to smack Rock in the face after a joke at the expense of WIll's wife Jada. Could Smith face criminal charges for striking Rock?

So far Chris Rock has not contacted police about the incident, although police are aware of what happened and have said they would be able to take a statement at a later date.

That however does not rule out prosecutors reviewing the evidence (of which there is clearly an abundance) and deciding to file charges. There is no requirement in California for a victim to file a police complaint for prosecutors to take action against a suspected assailant.
