How to watch the Oscar-winning film, CODA
The 2022 Oscar winner for Best Picture, CODA, is the first ever film released on a streaming service to win the award. Here’s where it's available.
It’s 2022 and times have changed - streaming is the new going to the theatre, especially after two years of a global pandemic. The shift was obvious in this year’s Oscar nominations. The front-runners for Best Picture were CODA and The Power of the Dog, both films which were released on a streaming service rather than in theatres.
CODA makes history
CODA took home the award for Best Picture (as well as Best Supporting Actor - Troy Kotsur - and Best Adapted Screenplay.) It’s the first time a streaming service has ever won the grand prize at the academy. CODA is an Apple TV Plus product, and it beat out Netflix’s The Power of the Dog. Netflix has been pining for a Best Picture award for years, but Apple TV Plus, which has been around just three years, beat them to making history.
CODA tells the story of a family whose members are all deaf except one, Ruby Rossi, who wants to pursue music. CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adult and the film is a remake of a French film, La Family Bélier. The movie made history for another reason as well, as actor Troy Kotsur became the first deaf man to win an Oscar (Best Supporting Actor) for his role in the film.
