Barcelona vs Real Madrid women break record

It was the second leg of the quarter final tie for the two historic clubs, and the Catalans led 3-1 from the game at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium in the capital. There had been plenty of talk ahead of the clash encouraging fans to make the effort to set a new record. And despite a rather rainy day in Barcelona, the people turned out in their thousands.

The official figure of 91,553 spectators is a new world record for a women's football game, beating the previous mark of 90,185 set at the World Cup final between the USA and China in 1999. As it turned out, the local fans had plenty to celebrate with Barça winning 5-2 on the night, an emphatic 8-3 on aggregate.

The women's game in Spain has actually been popular for some time and just a few years ago, in March of 2019, a new record was set when Barça Feminina visited the Wanda Metropolitano, with 60,739 watching from the stands. Over 45,000 tickets had been reserved one week before the game and this surpassed the previous world club record of 51,211 set in the Mexican league during a meeting between Tigres and Monterrey. Barcelona Femení ran out 0-2 winners on the day - Asisat Oshoala and Toni Duggan on target for the visitors.
