David de Gea was the most noticeablt absentee in the squad list for Spain's recent friendlies against Albania and Iceland. The most surprised of all was the player himself, who found out that he was to be left out of the squad by coach Luis Enrique. The coach phoned the Manchester United goalkeeper to personally tell him about his decision before announcing the list publicly. During that telephone conversation, the coach explained that he wanted to try out younger goalkeepers and for that reason, De Gea had been omitted from the list.

De Gea, surprised and confused by Spain snub

Sources close to De Gea tell AS that the keeper was not too pleased about the decision and he is annoyed with the coach. They say that he is struggling to understand the reason why he was left out and that is not entirely convinced by the coach's explanation. Meanwhile, those close to the coach assure AS that during the conversation, there was a moment when De Gea suggested that it might be better not to call him up for international duty in the future if he is only going to play a secondary role in the team. De Gea however insists that couldn't be further from the truth and that he would never say no to Spain regardless of what role he has.
