After the 2023 Oscar awards revealed their official nomination list and latino actress Ana De Armas earned a nomination in the best actress category for her role in ‘Blonde.’

Nominated alongside Cate Blanchett for her role in ‘TÁR,Andrea Riseborough for ‘To Leslie,’ Michelle Williams for ‘The Fabelmans,’ and Michelle Yeoh for ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once,’ De Armas is one of the front runners for the award in this category for her performance as the iconic Marilyn Monroe.

What is ‘Blonde’ about?

Back in September 2022, Netflix released their film ‘Blonde’ which gives viewers a look at the rise to fame and the tragic demise of actress Marilyn Monroe, one of the biggest stars in the world. The film is also an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oatesbook, Blonde, which is a fictionalized historical novel chronicling Monroe’s life.

Although both Netflix and the cast were excited for this project, many people had problems with the fact that De Armas was cast to play Monroe due to the fact that De Armas has an accent that takes away from the character.

With one user writing “I know the movie hasn’t come out yet but Blonde starring Ana de Armas looks stunning and the scenes gives me chills but i know y’all still hear her accent.. like it’s STRONG. I am very surprised they thought she sounded like Marilyn because she literally doesn’t. looks ? yes.”

Even with viewers disapproval in casting, De Armas explained in an interview with The Times of London, that she’s proud of herself for the work she put into perfecting her American accent. “It took me nine months of dialect coaching and practicing and some ADR sessions . It was a big torture, so exhausting. My brain was fried.”

Almost four months after its initial release ‘Blonde’ now has a 42 percent critic rating and a 32 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as mixed viewer opinions on social media and lack of nominations this award season. But we’re glad De Armas is getting recognition with her Oscars nomination.

A timeline of Ana De Armas’ career

Starting her acting career when she was 16, De Armas has a long history in the entertainment industry.

Her first leading role was in the romantic drama ‘Una rosa de Francia’ in 2006 and she booked the part while she still lived in Cuba.

Looking for more projects De Armas moved to Madrid, Spain, at the age of 18 and ended up booking and starring in the drama series ‘El internado’ for six seasons from 2007 to 2010.

It wasn’t until 2014 that the actress moved to Los Angeles to fully pursue her acting career. Since the move she has appeared in films such as War Dogs (2016), Hands of Stone (2016), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Knives Out (2019), The Gray Man (2022), and more.
