The Brazilian pop star Anitta and her record label of 10 years, Warner Music Group, have mutually decided to part ways.

The artist and the label made the announcement in a joint social media post on Tuesday.

“After eleven years of successful partnership, we’ve agreed to go our separate ways,” the post states.

Anitta says she would “auction off her organs” to get out of contract

The decision to split was mutual, and the statement clarifies that “Anitta would like to thank the Warner Music team for all their support. And the Warner team wishes Anitta all the best in the future.”

The news comes after Anitta responded to a fan last month who said that she should leave Warner for a label that values her, and pay whatever fine she could to get out.

The ‘Envolver’ singer responded by saying that it wasn’t that simple and that she would even be willing to “auction off her organs” to be free of Warner.

“My love, if I had a fine to pay, I would have already auctioned off my organs, no matter how expensive it was to get out. But unfortunately, it doesn’t [work that way],” she told the fan in Portuguese.

“When you’re young and still don’t know much, you have to pay close attention to the things you sign… if not you can spend a lifetime paying for the mistake.”

When did Anitta sign with Warner Music?

Anitta first signed with Warner Music Brazil in 2013, where she released the single ‘Meiga e Abusada’, which propelled the singer into fame after it was featured on the soundtrack of the telenovela ‘Amor à Vida’.

In 2020, Anitta then signed with Warner Music U.S., releasing ‘Versions of Me’ in 2022, a trilingual album featuring songs in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, although the majority of songs are in English.

The hit single ‘Envolver’ peaked at the number one spot on Billboard’s Global Excl. US and Spotify’s Global list, making her the first Brazilian to top either chart. The music video for the song, which Anitta also directed, went on to top YouTube’s Global Top Music Videos chart and has earned more than 500 million views.

Why was Anitta unhappy with Warner?

Anitta’s unhappiness with Warner Music revolved around their unwillingness to invest in her music videos, resulting in her often having to foot the bill for her productions, including the video for ‘Gata’.

In an Instagram live, Anitta said that Warner would only invest in a new video or single if it became a hit on TikTok.

“They only invest after it pays off on the internet,” she said. “Unfortunately, there are things I can’t get, that’s why I don’t buy millionaire cars because when I want to do something, I pay for it.”

She added, “The label is very tied to TikTok, to what goes viral, and if they don’t get a hit right away, they say ‘later.’”

They would also push for her to only release songs if they had a feature, which they pushed for on ‘Envolver’.

As of now, Anitta is a free agent.
