Sofia Vergara beat cancer at the age of 28 in the year 2000, and now she has her heart set on helping children who are battling the disease.

Thyroid cancer affects the glands in the neck area, which can be detected through tests. Though treatment has advanced 85% in expanding a sick child’s life for an additional five years and overall survival rates have increased, Vergara says there is still a lot of work to be done.

The 50-year-old actress, who once held the title of highest-earning woman in American entertainment, is now hard at work raising awareness and money for cancer research at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Colombian-American actress has dedicated herself to the initiative since 2012.

Raising cancer awareness

On World Cancer Day, a global initiative by the Union for International Cancer Control held February 4, Vergara encouraged those battling cancer with an inspiring Instagram post. Vergara shared a fundraising video on behalf of St. Jude, and urged people to get involved.

“Today is #WorldCancerDay. Join me in supporting @stjude and their mission to end childhood cancer,” the ‘America’s Got Talent’ host wrote.

Ambassador for St. Jude

Sofia Vergara wrote a blog post in December 2022 where she explained the work she has been doing so far to support the research family at St. Jude.

“As a St. Jude Ambassador, through the years, I’ve been able to help raise awareness and funds for the hospital in different ways,” Vergara wrote. “I love being part of the St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign.”

“Each year, I film new television spots and a movie trailer, and I record radio spots. I do whatever I can to help spread awareness of the lifesaving work that is being done at St. Jude,” Vergara continued.

“I have also served as a spokesperson for other marketing charitable campaigns which support St. Jude [...] and I’ve also hosted events that benefit the hospital such as the 25th annual LA Art show and its Opening Night Premiere Gala in 2020.”

The drive behind Vergara’s service

Vergara works from the heart. As a mother and cancer survivor herself, the star can personally relate to the struggles that families go through when battling the illness, and wants to do what she can to help them.

“It’s a great privilege to lend my voice to motivate people to support St. Jude and its mission,” Vergara said. “I’ve met so many wonderful children and their families. I have witnessed how strong and resilient they are, and I have seen their fight with cancer, and it really gives me hope.”

Every child deserves the chance to live their best life and celebrate every moment. When you support St. Jude, you help give kids with cancer around the world that chance. Together, we can save more lives.”
