Cesar Millan’s new life, living surrounded by dogs on a rehabilitation ranch

Television has given us countless stories and icons whose names have grown far beyond the screen, crossing borders worldwide. César Millán is one of those personalities, globally recognized as the “Dog Whisperer.”

Born in Culiacán, Mexico, Millán grew up on a farm—an environment that forged his lifelong connection with animals. He dedicated his heart and soul to this passion, which eventually inspired him to head to the United States to pursue his dreams.

He made the journey in 1991 with just $100 in his pocket and virtually no English. Once in the U.S., he began working as a dog trainer, landing Jada Pinkett Smith as one of his earliest clients.

When Millán confided in Pinkett Smith that his dream was to host a TV show about dogs, she told him he needed to improve his English and offered to pay for his language lessons. Her support didn’t stop there—she also helped him open his very first dog training center.

His work caught the attention of National Geographic, which offered him a show in 2004 titled Dog Whisperer. Millán quickly skyrocketed to fame as he rehabilitated some of the most troubled dogs.

The show propelled him to international stardom and brought in a high-profile clientele, including Virginia Madsen, Patti LaBelle, and Pinkett Smith herself. The hit series wrapped its run in 2016 after 189 episodes.

His massive popularity opened doors around the world, leading to guest appearances on major international talk shows like Spain’s El Hormiguero in 2011—the same year he launched another show, Leader of the Pack.

However, Millán’s journey hasn’t been without its dark moments. He faced severe hardship, including the devastating loss of his beloved pit bull, Daddy. “I had suicidal thoughts because of a sense of failure—that feeling of failing and not being good enough,” he later revealed.

Where is he now?

Life took a turn for the better, and in 2021 he returned to the screen to host a new series, Better Human Better Dog, which follows the day-to-day operations at his rehabilitation center in Santa Clarita, California.

Today, Millán lives on the ranch that houses the center, surrounded by nature and dogs.

“In this series, I open the doors of my ranch to transform dogs and their families,” Millán said. “That way, I can teach them how to connect and build the relationship we’re all looking for—one based on trust, respect, and love.”

Beyond television, the 56-year-old animal behaviorist has authored multiple best-selling books and built a massive digital footprint, amassing a social media following of more than three million fans.
