Vincent Pastore, actor from the series ‘The Sopranos’, dies: final farewell to the iconic Salvatore Bonpensiero
Actor Vincent Pastore, world-famous for his iconic role as Salvatore Bonpensiero—also known as “Big Pussy”—in the award-winning series “The Sopranos,” has died at the age of 80 in New York City. After several days without hearing from him, a neighbor found him dead in his home in the Bronx, the same borough where he was born in 1946. Local police are investigating the cause of death of the well-known actor, a fact sadly confirmed by his representative, Bob McGowan.
A final farewell to the iconic “Big Pussy” of “The Sopranos.” Pastore enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Upon returning home, he began studying acting, landing his first film role in “Black Roses” after the age of 40. Due to his robust and imposing appearance, Pastore specialized in criminal roles and the police genre, appearing in other productions such as ‘Goodfellas’ and ‘Carlito’s Way’. However, it was in 1999 that he landed his most famous role: that of Salvatore ‘Big Pussy’ Bonpensiero in the HBO series ‘The Sopranos’.
So much so that for no less than 30 episodes, Bonpensiero became one of protagonist Tony Soprano’s most trusted men, although he eventually became an FBI informant. After “The Sopranos,” Vincent Pastore appeared in “Mickey Blue Eyes,” “Two Family House,” “Riding in Cars with Boys,” “Made,” “The Hurricane,” and “Law & Order,” as well as later films such as “P.J.” and “Alienated.” The actor was also a regular on various reality shows.
On a personal note, the actor was involved in a controversy in 2005 when he pleaded guilty to attempted assault against his partner. According to the prosecution, Pastore struck the woman with whom he had a relationship on the back of the head and grabbed her hair tightly. The actor remained free on bail throughout the legal proceedings and ultimately accepted a sentence of 10 days of community service and attendance at a rehabilitation program.
