Christina Applegate calls out Candace Owens for criticizing SKIMS campaign
Christina Applegate speaks out against Candace Owen’s criticisms of Kim Kardashian’s brand SKIMS using a model in a wheelchair in the latest campaign.
Christina Applegate is no stranger to advocating for the rights of the disabled. On Thursday the actress took time to speak out against conservative commentator Candace Owens for her critique of Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS brand’s use of a model in a wheelchair.
Owen’s claimed the brand was taking “inclusivity” too far, calling the photoshoot “ridiculous.” The campaign she references featured a model in a wheelchair wearing the brand’s adaptive shapewear which is designed to be more accessible for people with limited mobility.
Owens’ initial comments
“I really don’t get it, and if I am wrong, educate me,” Owens initially said showing a photo that was used from a May 2022 SKIMS campaign. “I don’t know why this needs to be done. I’m just getting tired of this all-inclusivity thing. It seems ridiculous.”
Calling out her criticism
After hearing Owens’ comments, Applegate, who has been vocal about her recent diagnosis with MS and using a cane to aid with her mobility limitations, took to Twitter to call out Owen for insensitivity.
She wrote, “Going to try and sleep but my rage is keeping me awake. Candace Owens, do you know when you have seen pictures of me how f**king hard it was to get my clothes on? A team has to help me!!! So I’m excited for accessibility clothing for me and my community. Hope u wake.”
She continued in a second tweet, “I thought my last tweet was enough. But then my heart said something else. No rage. If Candace wants to get on the phone with me to be educated on being disabled. I will not come with anger. I will come with love. Because she needs to hear that. I pray for her tonight.sincerely”
In a third and final Tweet, she thanks SKIMS for their brand awareness and included an image of the model further defending the brand’s choices.
Applegate has previously been vocal about her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis which has caused her to start using a cane as a mobility aide for walking. Owens has yet to respond to Applegate’s criticisms.
