Da’Vine Joy Randolph wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress 2024 for The Holdovers
Randolph won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress at Sunday’s 2024 Academy Awards, for her performance as Mary Lamb in The Holdovers.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph crowned her successful awards season by securing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress on Sunday, for her role in The Holdovers. Randolph’s Oscars triumph comes on the back of supporting actress honours at a host of ceremonies in 2024, including the Golden Globes, BAFTA Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.
Randolph tops off Best Picture-nominated Holdovers
Directed by Alexander Payne, The Holdovers is the epitome of the dramatic comedy, a film that ingeniously tells the story of Paul Hunham, a peculiar history teacher who is forced to spend Christmas vacation at the boarding school where he teaches. There, he remains with a handful of wayward students.
Alongside all of them is Mary Lamb, played by Randolph. Barton Academy’s cafeteria manager, Lamb is mourning the loss of her son, a former student of the school, who has just died in Vietnam. A fim that was among 2024′s Best Picture nominees, The Holdovers is a beautiful and varied puzzle - and Randolph’s performance completes it.
“Now I realise I just need to be myself”
“For so long, I’ve always wanted to be different and now I realise I just need to be myself,” Randolph told audience members in an emotional acceptance speech at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.
