After a visually stunning 13-minute-long performance at the Super Bowl LVII halftime show, fans of Rihanna are wondering whether she was actually singing or lip-syncing throughout the show. After all, it has been done before by some of the biggest stars.

Various fans took to Twitter to speculate whether the artist was actually singing or not.

Public Speculation

The Super Bowl halftime show has been graced by many legendary artists over the years, including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, The Weeknd, and so on.

Over the years, the shows have only gotten more elaborate and flashy, with more of a push to incorporate complicated choreography and visually appealing stunts. The changes over the years have the performers focusing less on their vocals and more on their overall performance.

This change has encouraged more and more singers to opt out of actually singing live and instead lip-sync their songs.

While it’s still just speculation Rihanna Lip Synced her performance, several other pop stars before her have been accused of lip-syncing their shows as well.

Previous Halftime Shows

Janet Jackson’s infamous 2004 Super Bowl halftime show with Justin Timberlake did not only make headlines due to her wardrobe malfunction but because fans speculated the singer was also lip-syncing her performance too.

In 2012 when Madonna performed at the Super Bowl halftime show, rumors also arose that the pop star was lip-syncing her performance. It’s no surprise the ‘Material Girl’ singer opted to lip sync as her performance included tons of high-energy movements.

Ahead of her performance Elton John was also asked in an interview about the singer’s upcoming show to which he gave the singer some advice “Make sure you lip-sync good.”

So lucky for Rihanna, if she did actually lip-sync her Super Bowl halftime performance she wouldn’t be the first singer in history to do so.
