Selena Gomez will play in “one of the most challenging things” she has ever done as she stars in a Spanish-language musical crime comedy called Emilia Pérez.

Alongside Zoe Saldaña, the former Disney actress will play the wife of a Mexican drug cartel leader, known as Emilia Pérez. Saldaña will play an overworked lawyer who is kidnapped by a druglord (Gascón). “I knew it was going to stand out because of the story,” Saldaña told Variety on the day of the film’s premiere. “But I felt very excited because out of all the topics that Jacques could be making a film about, he chose this one.”

When will Emilia Pérez be released?

We’ve already had the premiere of the comedy, which took place at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, May 18.

The film will be released theatrically in France on August 28, 2024. It is divided into four acts and also features original songs performed by the cast. While the US release date has not yet been released, fans hope that it will hit screens by the end of the year.

Which actors are in Emilia Pérez?

Directed by Jacques Audiard, the film stars Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña and Edgar Ramírez as the main cast, with Karla Sofía Gascón and Mark Ivair also starring.

Quizzed on her role, Gomez said that “there’s this scene where I’m being left – I’m not giving anything away – and I remember I channeled the moment when I had to go to rehab for the first time and leaving … I just felt like it was just getting that out when I remembered that first moment and being terrified so it felt really cathartic.”

“I feel like I have these moments in my life that have happened and I’m able to use that and it actually feels great, it feels like after a good cry or something, it’s a good feeling. I don’t think I’ve been able to even touch the surface of what I know I’m capable of doing. I just fight for my roles and I’m always auditioning so I like to earn it.”

“I think this movie is about the power of femininity,” Gascón told Variety via a translator. “It starts in a very dark, male-dominated, violent world and, thanks to community, it becomes brighter and better.”
