Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, passed away at 69 after battling advanced lung cancer. She died on December 2, 2024, in St. Joseph, Missouri, as reported by TMZ who confirmed the news with the artist’s rep.
Who was Debbie Nelson, Eminem’s mother?
Born in 1955 on a Kansas military base, Nelson faced a challenging upbringing in a large, dysfunctional family. At 16, she married Marshall Bruce Mathers Jr., and at 18, she gave birth to Marshall Bruce Mathers III, known globally as Eminem.
Their relationship was tumultuous, with Eminem often referencing their struggles in his music. In 1999, Nelson sued him for defamation over lyrics suggesting she used drugs, resulting in a $25,000 settlement. She detailed her perspective in the 2008 memoir “My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem.”
Despite their past conflicts, they sought reconciliation. Eminem’s 2013 song “Headlights” served as a public apology, expressing regret for past grievances. In 2022, Nelson congratulated Eminem on his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, expressing pride in his achievements.
Nelson is survived by her sons, Eminem and Nathan Samra-Mathers, and six grandchildren. Eminem has not publicly commented on her passing.
