What are the Filmfare Awards and when did they start?

For those less familiar with these, the Filmfare Awards were initiated in 1954 by Filmfare magazine of The Times Group, are prestigious annual accolades that celebrate excellence in the Hindi-language film industry of India. Often hailed as one of the most renowned film events in the country, the awards were initially known as the “Clare Awards” and were inspired by the Academy Awards. A distinctive feature of the Filmfare Awards is the dual voting system introduced in 1956, where both the public and a committee of experts participate in the selection process. In contrast to the National Film Awards, which are chosen by a government-appointed panel, Filmfare Awards embrace a more inclusive approach.

The ceremony, historically held in Mumbai, has undergone changes over the years, including sponsorship by various private organizations. In the 1990s, the event was broadcast live on television but was later discontinued. Since 2001, a recorded and edited version of the awards ceremony has been televised a week or two after the live event. Notably, the ceremony moved to Colors channel in 2018.

While the Filmfare Awards were once the foremost and most-recognized awards in Bollywood until the mid-1990s, the emergence of several other awards in Mumbai has led to a decline in viewership since the 2000s. Despite this, the Filmfare Awards continue to symbolize a significant acknowledgment of artistic and technical achievements in the Indian film industry.
