Freddie Mercury’s secret daughter revealed: “He was devoted to me”
The former frontman and lead singer of Queen may have fathered a child during an affair with a friend’s wife in 1976, according to his latest biography, Love, Freddie.
Just when it seemed there was nothing left to uncover about the life of the late Freddie Mercury—who died in 1991 at the age of 45 from bronchopneumonia, a complication of AIDS which he had publicly acknowledged—a new biography reveals that the Queen frontman may have become a father.
According to the book Love, Freddie by Lesley-Ann Jones, Mercury had a secret daughter who is now 48 years old, born from a romance with a friend’s wife back in 1976. Apparently, the child was raised by her mother and her mother’s husband, but she always knew who her biological father was and maintained frequent contact with him.
“Freddie Mercury was and is my father. We had a very close and loving relationship from the moment I was born and throughout the final 15 years of his life,” writes the woman, identified only as ‘B’, in the book. In fact, Mercury reportedly left her his personal diaries, which she lent to the biographer for this new volume. “He adored me and was devoted to me. The circumstances of my birth may seem, by most people’s standards, unusual and even outrageous. That should come as no surprise. It never detracted from his commitment to love and look after me. He cherished me like a treasured possession,” she adds.
Doubts remain
This secret was allegedly known by Mercury’s closest circle, including his parents, his sister, the rest of Queen, and Mary Austin—his former fiancée and the woman to whom he left a large part of his estate. The revelation is so significant that the author admits she initially doubted its authenticity, doubts that quickly vanished once she reviewed the documentation provided by the now 48-year-old woman, who claims to live in Europe.
“My instinct was to doubt everything, but I am absolutely sure she is not a fantasist. No one could have faked all this. Why would she have worked with me for three-and-a-half years, never demanding anything?” says the author. The singer, although many have labeled as homosexual, also had romantic relationships with women, including Mary Austin.
